Futsal NSW Premier League sizzles in round 5

Round 5 of the Futsal NSW Premier League was as hot as they come as leaders Boomerangs beat Enfield Rovers 7-4, Inner West Magic downed Mountain Majik 3-1, Campbelltown Quake rumbled Mascot Vipers 6-2, and Dural Warriors sneaked in a late goal to draw 2-2 with a rising Phoenix.
A five-game unbeaten run has Boomerangs (13) in front of Inner West (9), Dural (7), Campbelltown (6) and Mountain Majik (6), with Mascot (4), Phoenix (4) and Enfield (3) still well in the playoff hunt.
Individually, Boomerangs team-mates Daniel Bennett and Michael Reeve lead the league with six goals scored, one ahead of Harley Da Silva (Quake) and Giovanni Leuzzi (Rovers).

Boomerangs overcome Enfield
Boomerangs kept their flag flying at the top of the premier league castle with a stirring 7-4 win against a stubborn Enfield Rovers at the AIS Training Halls on Saturday night.
 
The home side led 3-1 at the break and increased their lead to 5-1 before Rovers, driven by a Shervin Adeli hat-trick, pulled it back to 5-3 before Boomerangs bounced back, Daniel Bennett and Daniel Fulton doubles paving the way for a solid 7-4 win.
Boomerangs goalkeeper Angelo Konstantinou said his team was playing well at both ends of the court. “We started off well and backed off a bit; Enfield had a fair few chances but we shut them down well,” he said.
“[In regards to their unbeaten run] A lot of the young boys who played with us at the end of last year have progressed really well and they’re a lot more comfortable this year.”
Quake break Vipers
Campbelltown Quake returned to the winners circle in emphatic fashion, downing a strong Mascot Vipers side 6-2 at All Sorts Indoor Sports Centre on Saturday night.
 
A sluggish summer start had Campbelltown on the back foot but they really broke the shackles when Harley Da Silva and Danny Martinez secured a 2-0 halftime buffer, Quake going on with the job in the second stanza with Da Silva completing his hat-trick, Martinez netting again and Shayne Ardle ensuring the three points.
 
Campbelltown manager Carlos Martinez said a midweek chat at training had the desired effect. “We talked about putting some good results on the books and the boys went out there and played their best game of the season so far; we had intensity and commitment and best of all we took our chances and came up with a  really much-needed win,” he said.
“Whether it’s the start of something or not, next week we’ll tell. We’ve lost [goalkeeper] Gavin O’Brien for the season and young Andrew Haim stepped up and was brilliant for us… It’s a happy story for a change.”
Magic outdo Majik
A dazzling Inner West Magic made Mountain Majik disappear with a clinical 3-1 win at Morris Iemma Indoor Sports Centre on Saturday night.
Daniel Fogarty blasted in the openers for Inner West and Adam Cooper latched onto a blinder to make it 3-0 at the interval, and it was more of the same in the second term until Grant Cornwell’s late consolation for Majik bracketed some respectability in the scoreline.
It doesn’t get any easier for the premier league newcomers as Mountain face Dural, Mascot and Campbelltown away over the next three rounds to complete a seven-game road run, but victory was welcome relief for Inner West.
“It was a very good game; the boys played unbelievable and kept a lot of possession,” coach Carmine Bortoni said. “But the win was good because Boomerangs are setting a good pace.”
Phoenix hold Dural
A gutsy Phoenix Futsal Club played out of their skins against dual champions Dural Warriors but were forced to wear a 2-2 draw at Ryde Sports Centre on Saturday night.
 
Nothing separated the teams at halftime before the game really came alive in the second, Rob Davey firing in a Phoenix opener before Dural’s Jarrod Basger leveled, Andrea Canini pushing the home side ahead a second time only for Basger to net a second time and securing a 2-2 draw.
 
Phoenix coach Chris Cowley felt his team should have got more from an exciting and entertaining match. “We had a few chances to make sure of the win and the boys were all disappointed we didn’t get all three points,” he said.
“We went long periods without the ball and played to the counter, but that was always our plan and we’ll take a lot of confidence out of this… the boys are learning that if we play to our strengths this is what we can do.”
