The City of Newcastle has come to life thanks to the inaugural Special Olympics Asia Pacific Games currently taking shape where as many as 600 athletes across 32 countries have taken to various sports, including football in representing their country.

Held across seven days and concluding this Sunday December 7, the Special Olympics Asia Pacific Games, sponsored by IGA, who also sponsor Football NSW’s IGA National Premier Leagues NSW Mens 1 competition, has also seen an estimated 200,000 spectators converge to the beautiful city of Newcastle enjoying what has been a fantastic tournament.

Football has been one of the main talking points of the tournament thus far and has been the most popular sport within Special Olympics having the largest number of participants in the Special Olympics World Summer Games held in Athens in 2011.

Currently there are three competitions being run from a football side with the Men’s 11-a-side, Men’s 5-a-side and Women’s 5-a-side taking place with Australia proudly doing their bit in capturing some magic moments in what has been a fine tournament thus far.
