The recently re-developed Valentine Sports Park was a hive of activity this week as 55 young referees went through their preseason paces as part of Football NSW’s referees’ boot camp.

Football NSW Referees Manager Kris Griffiths Jones along with Robert Nieuwenhuis, aided by Hyundai A-League and ex-FIFA officials conducted what was a fantastic start to the season for all participants involved.

Referee Education Coordinator Nieuwenhuis stated the camp allowed the youngsters an opportunity to feel the professionalism of refereeing.

We plan on giving the participants a taste of what the Hyundai A-league referees training and coaching is.

“It will help them gain an understanding of what it takes to get to the top as a referee.

“This camp further assisted in the development pathway for all junior referees who featured in this boot camp.”

Niuewenhuis continued on by explaining what the camp undertook.

“The course included video reviews, technical training, practical training, a fitness test, Laws of the game tests and seminars.”

With Australia hosting the AFC Asian Cup, the young officials also had the opportunity to attend the Qatar v Bahrain match and witnessed officiating at the highest level.
