Waratah Cup ready to roll in 2015

The annual state-based knockout cup competition run by Football NSW, the Waratah Cup, will once again be a valuable part of the football calendar in 2015.

Steeped in history, the Waratah Cup was first played in 1971 and, following a 20 year hiatus, recommenced in 1991 where Blacktown City took home the silverware.

Last year Blacktown City won the trophy for a fifth time, the most of any team in the competition’s history.

In 2015, following the introduction of the Westfield FFA Cup, the Waratah Cup will be structured slightly differently.

Entrants into the NSW Preliminary Rounds of the Westfield FFA Cup qualify for the Waratah Cup should they progress to the Round of 32. Those five teams will compete for the state’s top honours.

With an odd number of teams qualifying, a Play-Off Match will be held on the 3rd June, followed by Semi-Finals on the 17th June and culminating in the Waratah Cup Final on the 5th July.

Head of Competitions Troy McColl is looking forward to seeing who will qualify for the knockout cup competition.

“It’s always interesting to see which teams will challenge. There have been over 100 entrants again this year, and the beauty of the Waratah Cup is that grassroots clubs could give the National Premier Leagues clubs a run for their money.

“It’s one of our oldest trophies so there’s certainly a special place in the heart for many people involved in the Cup.”
