Futsal Premier League Preliminary Final

Campbelltown Quake will take on Dural Warriors in Saturday’s Football NSW Futsal Premier League championship decider following a thrilling penalty shootout win over Inner West Magic in Wednesday night’s preliminary final at Valentine Sports Park.
Goals to Shannon Fielding either side of the break lifted Campbelltown 2-0 up and with the clock ticking down Inner West ramped up to a power play with Miles Downie halving the deficit and fifth-man Jonathan Barzel drawing Magic level a minute from fulltime.
Both sides had chances to win it in the bonus period but the game headed to a penalty shootout to be decided.
In a very interesting move Quake keeper Andrew Haim, who had played an exceptional game between the sticks, was replaced for the last two spotkicks by youth keeper Jordan Winkle, and with Brian Griffin-Colls hoping to keep the shootout level for Inner West had his penalty strike saved, which was retaken for a goal-line encroachment, only for Winkle to save again and shift Campbelltown into the grand final.
The result was sweet revenge for Quake, who were knocked out of last summer’s finals with a penalty shootout loss to Magic, and club chief Carlos Martinez was ecstatic.
“It was an awesome night,” he said. “We made it hard for ourselves and rode our luck a little bit with our keeper [Haim] being in great form.
“If you had a look at both squads on paper you would say it’d be hard for us to win, but games aren’t won on paper and the guys stepped up; we just really frustrated them defensively.
“[In regard to Simon Keith’s bold decision to bring on Winkle for the final two penalties] We had Jordan on the bench and he is a renowned penalty saver – he won the penalty shootout in last season’s 16 boys grand final – and coach throws him in for last two kicks,” Martinez said. “It turned out to be a terrific move.”
Inner West maestro Matteo Maoirana remained happy with the team’s direction despite the defeat. “It was disappointing in regard to the result, but not the performance,” he said.
“Andrew Haim had an absolute blinder in goals for Campbelltown and was definitely the difference, but we played our best games in the last two matches and weren’t been able to win.
“We don’t need to go back to the drawing board. Our team is starting to get some seasons together and we are right there with the best [Dural]; our defence is the best in the comp, we just need to be more clinical up front and maybe find a regular scorer.”
