Garriock praises Female Football Week
One of the most renowned names in Australian women’s football is Heather Garriock, a true ambassador of the game.
With almost 150 caps in the Green and Gold, three World Cups and two Olympics, Garriock is a star and idol for many young female footballers, not only in New South Wales but the country.
Today, she is currently involved with PlayStation®4 National Premier Leagues NSW Women’s team Sydney University SFC, the team she led to grand final glory last season.
In light of this success, Garriock stated that the game needed more female coaches.
“Having transitioned into a coaching role and having recently participated in the Hyundai A-License course myself, It was fantastic to see three other females there also.
“It would be awesome to see the number of female football coaches growing.”
The female game is moving in the right direction, numbers are continuously on the rise and it was something that Garriock had praised.
“There is a vast difference in the game since I started playing at the age of six.
“When I first started, I was the only girl in the team but today there are teams just for girls.”
Garriock believes that ‘Female Football Week’ will only raise the profile of the women’s game in the state.
“I think it’s a great initiative it allows females the opportunity to be in the spotlight and acknowledge females in general.”
“The week long festivities gives the flexibility for all participants to be involved!”
A mother herself, Garriock believes parents support is vital.
“Seeing Football New South Wales hold Female Football Week only encourages mothers with daughters like myself the opportunities to make ourselves available in sport and obviously football.”
