AIA Vitality MiniRoos football was the centre of attention in Wagga Wagga last week as the Football NSW Regional Roadshow came to town in the Riverina.

After already stopping by Albury-Wodonga FA & Griffith FA the roadshow arrived on a hot night at Kessler Park, greeted by over 120 boys and girls aged 5 – 11 years old.

Ed Ferguson, Football NSW MiniRoos Development was ecstatic in what was a fantastic turn out.

“It was great to see so many players come out and take part before the season has kicked off, and I’m particularly impressed by the amount of girls that turned up.”

Ed was joined by Ex-Matildas and Wagga Wagga local Sally Shippard, along with coaches Grace Di Trapani, Claudia Di Trapani & Brooke Gayler who managed to keep 120 enthusiastic footballers engaged and challenged for the 90 minute session.

The coaches tested the players through a series of skill based games before finishing off with a ‘mini world cup’ whereby similar age groups played games against each other throughout the afternoon.

Deb Di Trapani, Secretary at Football Wagga Wagga was delighted with the turn out and has since heaped praise on the coaches and Football NSW after receiving lots of positive feedback on the event. Deb is already looking forward to and planning the 2017 season opening visit from Football NSW Development Officers.

During a week in which the Matildas successfully qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics it was fitting that Shippard participated with the roadshow, providing young girls and women a grounded and well-rounded role model both within and outside of football. Sally was swamped with questions, photos and autographs throughout the afternoon with many families and parents sharing stories with Sally and celebrating with the players that she too started playing football on that very patch of grass when she was a five year old.

After the energising MiniRoos session Oscar Gonzalez conducted a grassroots certificate at Kessler Oval, with many parents sticking around to learn, practice and discuss junior football in NSW. With over 20 participants the certificate was a success, with a high involvement, great discussion and feedback from all involved.

A big thank you to Erwin Budde, Deborah Di Trapani and the above mentioned coaches who made the afternoon and evening possible.
