Round 2 Review – State League Women’s
The second round of action is in the books with more thrilling action highlighted by our match of the round APIA Leichhardt vs Parramatta FC.
Match of the Round: APIA Leichhardt 7 defeated Parramatta FC 1
Apia Leichhardt flexed their muscles as they plundered seven past Parramatta FC at a soggy Lambert Park tonight.
This season has been the best start for the APIA Leichhardt Tigers has experienced in quite some time, as they pressed Parramatta at every opportunity.
It took a stunning effort though to unlock the defense and break the deadlock after ten minutes. The ball found it’s way to Erin Clout slam past Emily Clark.
On 13 minutes Parramatta had their first chance, Yadira Rengifo won the ball and played in Stephanie Lagudi who placed it right at the keeper.
Dana Buttigieg doubled the APIA lead after 23 minutes – she flicked home a good delivery from Lucy Gilfedder after some impressive build up.
A minute later it was three after the ball bounced around the box eventually fell to Koo Barbi to curl home.
The Tigers weren’t content to sit on the lead, as they continued to pepper Clark’s goal. The keeper produced some magnificent saves to keep it under double digits.
The APIA midfield continued to feed their strikers with chances, and Christina Ferreya with a sweet turn, made room and slotted past the Parramatta FC keeper for 4-0.
Parramatta FC almost clawed one back just before the whistle, as a bouncing ball allowed Gilfedder to slip behind the defense but hooked her shot wide.
Clark came up big for Parramatta FC early in the second half – three superb saves within ten minutes included a big stop on a rampaging Buttigieg.
Just after the hour mark, APIA Leichhardt had their fifth. Ferreya burst down the left and with a handful deflection, into the path of Buttigieg for her second.
With both teams started to make changes, Parramatta earned themselves a few chances but unfortunately put one into their own net in the 75th minute.
For their endeavour and spir it – Parramatta got themselves on the scoresheet in the 79th minute. Rengifo glanced a header home for a superb corner for 6-1.
APIA Leichhardt had the final say in a comprehensive victory when Dione King pounced on the ball to arrow home the seventh and final goal.
"We’ve been working on a few things, and I have been happy with how we played. This is probably the best start APIA Leichhardt has made in State League Women’s in a few years"
"Competitions aren’t won in April though, so it is a good start and we continue on from there." Said Matteo Maiorana.
Conversely Paul Fitzpatrick was heartened by the effort shown by his Parramatta FC side.
"There were a few times we were disjointed but also we played some good stuff ourselves. This season is a marathon not a sprint, it’s a new squad so we’re still building"
"It was nice for the girls to get that [Rengifo’s goal] as it gives them some satisfaction in their effort." Said Fitzpatrick.

UNSW Lions 2 defeated by SD Raiders 3
SD Raiders kept their perfect start alive with a stirring second half comeback.
The Lions started out brightly and led 2-nil at the break thanks to goals from Georgina Goulding and Rachelle Godman.
SD Raiders stormed back to claim all three points thanks to a brace from Brittany Holzheimer and a Dominique Caridad goal.
Afterwards Catherine Cannuli praised the spirit of her SD Raiders side after being 2-nil down and winning.
St George FC 4 defeated Gladesville Ravens 1
St George FC rebounded from their round one loss with a resounding 4-1 win.
They dominated large portions of the game and swept to a 2-nil halftime lead.
Braces from Marissa Nicopoulos and Lily Chen put the Ravens to the sword.
Isabella Breukelaar pulled one back for Gladesville Ravens late to give them some joy.
Western NSW Mariners FC vs Mount Druitt Town Rangers called off due to lightning.
