Round 4 Review – State League Women’s

It was another exciting round filled with goals, drama and tense action with the State League Women’s teams out to build or regain their early season form.

Gladesville Ravens 2 defeated by UNSW Lions 8

UNSW Lions made a statement with their 8-2 thrashing of a poor Gladesville Ravens side at Peel Park today.

Headlined by Rachelle Godman’s hat-trick as the Lions burst out to an impressive 3-1 lead at the half-time whistle.

Renato Jalen’s women never took their foot off the pedal with a five goal haul in the second with Carol Breen with a brace.

Danielle Abel, Georgina Goulding and Antonella Markovic added their names to the scoresheet in an afternoon UNSW moved into the top four.

For Gladesville Ravens – Hannah Gestier and Noelle Loyzaga’s goals were scant consolation for coach John Cook who lamented a poor performance against a top class UNSW Lions side.

Western NSW Mariners FC 2 defeated APIA Leichhardt Tigers 1

Western NSW Mariners handed APIA Leichhardt their first defeat this season in a fiery affair in Wallerawang.

The home side struck the vital first goal with Sammie Wood’s fifth goal of the season to lead 1-nil.

Dana Buttigieg broke through the Mariners defense to level for the APIA Leichhardt Tigers. She couldn’t celebrate long as she got into a confrontation with Mariner’s Wood and both strikers were sent off.

It evolved into a tight tussle between two of the top sides of State League Women who may be fighting for the premiership later this season. Today was almost destined to end up 1-1.

Enter Kya Godbier who made it two goals in as many weeks to hand the Mariners all three points.

Western NSW Mariners coach Michael Godbier praised his squad in a “gutsy win that wasn’t pretty but they stuck at it and picked up all three points”.

St George FC 3 defeated Mount Druitt Town Rangers 1

The Saints continued their strong form with a thorough 3-1 victory at home this afternoon.

St George FC bolted out of the blocks to lead 3-nil at the break. Marissa Nicopoulos popped up once again with a brace.

Lauren Gardner added a third to complete a first half performance to please Saints coach Carlo Tini.

Mount Druitt clawed one back in the second half but St George FC have goalkeeper Stephanie Lara to thank for keeping it at one.

The shot-stopper was at her best to prevent the comeback and pull the Saints into equal first position after the weekend ended.
