The 2016 NSW Schools Football Challenge kicked off in fine fashion at the ‘home of Football’, namely Valentine Sports Park on Tuesday as six teams overall battled it out in both the Boys and Girls categories in determining who the outstanding school in NSW would be.
The Boys semi-finalists saw Freeman Catholic College from Bonnyrigg, Westfield Sports High School from Fairfield West and Moriah College from Queens Park battle it out while in the Girls category Westfield Sports High School took on the likes of St Joseph’s Catholic College from Gosford East and Pymble Ladies College in seeing who’d be crowned the Champion School for 2016.
It was a day to remember for the entire crew from the Westfield Sports High School as they took out both categories with the Boys, coached by Kory Babington defeating Freeman Catholic College while the Girls, coached by Leah Blayney, proved to be far too strong for St Joseph’s Catholic College.
School representatives from across NSW competed tirelessly in 2016 in reaching these finals stages of this prestigious Cup competition as school’s football continues to grow from strength to strength.
Football NSW’s Head of Women’s and Schools Football Hayley Todd stated the important role a glamour event such as the NSW Schools Football Challenge played in the development of the sport.
“The NSW Schools Football Challenge is a highlight on the school’s football calendar of events and It was exhilarating to see such great football talent on display here at Valentine Sports Park.
“Congratulations to NSW CCC, NSW CIS and NSW CHS for hosting such a great knockout tournament for players, coaches and referees.”
The action at Valentine Sports Park was of high calibre as a number of future stars were on show with the likes of Bonnyrigg White Eagles rising star Martin Lo, Liam McGing and female guns Jada Mathyssen Whyman and Princess Ibini-Isei just some of the names that took part in what was a fantastic day of school’s football played in front of a healthy crowd.
