Football NSW is deeply saddened to hear the news of the passing of one of Australia’s most prominent journalists, namely the Great Andrew Dettre.
Born in Hungary, Dettre fled to Australia in 1948 with one thing in mind – promote his beloved sport, namely Football.
An iconic journalist and football pioneer, Dettre put his heart and soul to the world game in this country ever since he took over as head editor of the then Australian publication Soccer World for 20 years from 1962.
Dettre, who was also inducted into the FFA Hall of Fame earlier this year, then went on to become of the most respected voices in the Australian football media, a talented writer he worked tirelessly in pushing the sport to where it is today in the upper echelons of world football.
A journalist who saw the bigger picture and inspired and mentored many current journalists today, Dettre will long be missed.
Football NSW would like to pass on its deepest condolences to the Dettre family.
May he rest in heavenly peace.
