The historic Cottam Cup run by the Granville & Districts Soccer Football Association will see the grand finale take shape this Sunday at Melita Stadium when the Granville Kewpies do battle against Inter Lions at 3pm.

2018 has been the first year in the Cup’s long and rich history that the competition has been opened to a club outside of the Granville District Soccer Football Association with Canterbury Districts Soccer Football Association’s Inter Lions ready to pounce on the trophy.

Granville & Districts Soccer Football Association CEO Mike Quarmby is eagerly anticipating Sunday’s clash and reiterated the important role the Cottam Cup has played in the history of the game in Australia.

“The inaugural Cottam Cup commenced way back in 1907 when Pyrmont lifted the first ever trophy.

“The trophy was renamed in honour of Granville Magpie striker Private John William Cottam who was killed in 1917 during World War One.

“We are hoping this revitalised Cottam Cup competition will draw in clubs from all around the state in future years as we have seen this year with Inter Lions winning a place with this Sunday’s Final.

“Good luck to both the Kewpies and Inter on Sunday in what will be a match not to be missed.

“They’ve done ever so well to get to this point after the Cup kicked off with 32 teams so we are all looking forward to a great match.”

Two curtain raiser matches will kick-off Cottam Cup proceedings on Sunday as two local GDSFA matches have been penned in with Parramatta City taking on Auburn District in the Under 13 Division 1 competition at 12:20pm with Pendle Hill FC tackling the Wenty Waratahs at 1:40pm in the Under 14 Division 1.
