Two generations of Australian sports

The recent Roselea FC Female Football Gala Day brought together two generations of great Australian sporting representatives when former Davis Cup tennis champion John Alexander OAM met Future Matildas star, Cortnee Vine.

Alexander, now the federal Member for Bennelong in our national parliament, was formerly a professional tennis player, reaching no 8 in the world in 1975 and representing Australia in Davis Cup for 15 years including as a member of the 1977 Davis Cup winning team.

Cortnee Vine is a professional footballer whose career is just commencing.

Currently contracted to the Newcastle Jets in the W-League, Vine has represented Australia at u17 and u20 levels. She is a member of the current Future Matildas Program and is rated by many astute judges as having all the makings of being a full Matildas in the not too distant future.

The Roselea FC Female Football Gala Day was the chance opportunity for these two different generations of Australian sporting representatives to meet and exchange some personal stories of their individual physical preparations for elite sporting contests.

Alexander, MP for Bennelong, was attending and presenting trophies as the local member while Vine was present in her role as Roselea Football Ambassador through which she has been promoting Roselea FC and mentoring junior girls at the club.

Rohan Primrose, Vice President, Womens Football at Roselea FC.

“Part of what we do at our club is to bring people of all ages and many backgrounds together through grass-roots sports.  It was a delight today, to see a current politician and an emerging young athlete, from different generations connect through their shared experience of playing sport for their country.

“We are looking to do similar at a more localised, community level.”
