Match of the Round: Sydney City Eagles 6 defeated South Coast Taipans 3

A first half blitz saw Sydney City Eagles overrun South Coast Taipans as they started their Championship defense on a cool evening at Michael Clarke Recreation Centre on Saturday twilight.

Matthew Trotter opened the onslaught with a scorching effort, before Martin Fernandez and Michael Cimino swept home sandwich between Trotter completing his brace. Sam Perre and Giovanni Strati added further goals in the second stanza to round off the dominant victory.

South Coast Taipans showed glimpses of slick play. Klime Sekutkoski made it 1-nil then a thunderous volley from Kyle Del made it 4-2 at the break. Matthew Mazevski found a consolation goal in the second half for the 6-3 final.

Both sides started the contest off at a feverish pace. South Coast Taipans got the perfect start as a slicing run through the middle created the first shot saved then Klime Sekutkoski slammed home the rebound to make it 1-nil.

They continued to cut through early, Sekutkoski was in acres of space from a kick-in, played in one of his fellow Taipans but some desperate Eagles defense repelled them.

Those chances spurred the Eagles into action. Domenic Vaccari had a low shot saved before Sam Perre burst through but Taipans keeper Bradley Peryman denied him with a magnificent leg save.

Sydney City Eagles would find their breakthrough though. 13 minutes in, Matthew Trotter thrashed an effort into the cage for 1-1. His goal opened up the floodgates for the Eagles as they went on with the scoring in the first half.

Trotter stood confidently over a free-kick that rocketed into the wall before it fell to Martin Fernandez to lash home for 2-1. Trotter quickly completed his brace when he combined well with Perre to stretch the advantage to 3-1.

South Coast mounted a comeback when Kyle Del popped up on the right-hand side of the court to volley home a superb goal that left Eagles custodian John Dimitrakas stationary, making it 3-2 with seven minutes left of the first half.

The Eagles extended their advantage back out to two goals when Michael Cimino tapped home from a superb angled ball from Dean Pelekanos for 4-2. Sydney City Eagles rode out the early damage and were in full control headed to the break.

Their advantage extended three minutes into the restart, some smart thinking from the kick-in found Perre in space, allowing the forward to slide the ball home for 5-2.

Whilst the attack will take much of the plaudits for the Eagles. They were stout in their defensive work as well, with a number of key interventions in the second half, helped by some key saves from Dimitrakas as the Taipans tried to rally back into the contest.

Sydney City Eagles finished off the contest in the 38th minute when Giovanni Strati popped up to tap home from an incisive movement for 6-2.

Despite not taking the points, Taipans did finish the contest with another goal. Matthew Mazevski kept himself in the contest to sweep home a goal in the final minute for a 6-3 final.

Speaking after their victory, Sydney City Eagles coach Roy Perre praised the effort of his squad while they were down on numbers as they dominated the contest.

“I have to give credit to the senior players – Matthew Trotter, Sam Perre – the rest were kids. We were underdone but we’ll be better next week. It was an unbelievable effort as they slotted straight into the team.” finished Perre.
