In poker, it’s always coming sevens and it seemed teams in the SELECT Futsal Premier League 2, got a similar notice in a weekend filled with goals, drama and futsal.

It also saw Boomerangs FS move to sole possession of first whilst Sydney City, West City and Raiders found themselves in the win column. Let’s get onto the review!

Match of the Round: Sydney City Eagles 6 defeated Phoenix Futsal Club 1

An impressive performance from Tameeka Thomson has propelled Sydney City Eagles to their third win of the season, a 6-1 dismantling of Phoenix Futsal Club, on Saturday afternoon at Michael Clarke Recreation Centre.

Thomson nailed a hat-trick including the opener, as Sydney City were rampant from the first minute of the contest. Jessica Beale was an able foil, chipped in with a pair of goals with Tasha Hudson rounded out the scoring, as the Eagles continue their sequence of win-loss and move into the top four.

The result was a devastating one for Phoenix Futsal Club. They slip to fourth position after their strong start to the season. Isabel Gomez fired home late in the first half to quell the rising tide slightly but they were second best today.

From the first minute, Sydney City looked in a mood today. Thomson fired a fierce effort right at Phoenix keeper, Eri Arikawa then slipped in Tasha Hudson to crash an effort against the base of the post in an ominous start.

Jess Beale got into the action with a straight shot in the fifth minute, before Phoenix had their first shot, Sarah Moore flicked the ball past a defender but arrowed her effort wide of the left post.

The Eagles made their start count soon enough, Thomson stole the ball on halfway, broke clear and unleashed a powerful shot to make it 1-nil. Quickly, they doubled their delight to complete their fast start.

Once again, Beale took on her defender, rolled right past her then angled the ball into the bottom left corner of the net, making it 2-nil.

Eagles stepped on the accelerator, Thomson had a pair of chances, again from some aggressive defense but both were spurned. Beale finished off their impressive first 25 with a rocket of a shot, that Arikawa thrashed away.

Phoenix Futsal did find some joy before the break. An incisive movement opened the space for Isabel Gomez to sweep home, making it 2-1 headed into the break.

The barrage continued in the second half, Thomson arrowed wide right from kick-off then made up for her miss in the 29th minute. She smashed home a second to make the Eagles advantage a pair again, 3-1, with hunger for more.

Her strike partner quickly added the fourth, she rolled home another smart effort as the Eagles were in firm control of the contest. They looked ready to continue the sequence of win-loss-win in the first five weeks of the season.

Phoenix earnt themselves some brief respite with their top-scorer Hannah Mcnulty burst into action. First, the striker fired home before she got inventive with a scoop shot that ballooned over the top of the net.

Sydney City iced their victory with a pair of goals late in the contest, as Tasha Hudson rolled home her first goal then Thomson completed a day out for herself, her 48th minute goal finished off hat-trick to make it 6-1.

Other Round 5 Results

Seven was the magic number this weekend. Boomerangs FS put seven past SD Raiders Futsal Club in a dominant 7-nil triumph Saturday afternoon at Fairfield Youth & Leisure Centre. Eleanor Raymond, Michaela Day, Ella-Rose Brown and Nicole Jalocha rounded out the scoring as Boomerangs moved three points clear at the top of the ladder.

It’s always coming sevens is a popular poker parlance, and the goal bonanza continued in Redfern, West City Crusaders broke through for their first victory of the season, smashing Sydney Futsal Club, 7-nil in the final kick-off of the weekend. The Crusaders shared the scoring around in their rout, Dione King the only player to find the net twice as Christine Granero, Jessica Thorley, Angela Gardener, Chantelle Trovato and Kaitlin Harms completed the scoresheet which moved the Crusaders two points from the playoff positions.

Lastly, but certainly not least, Raiders Futsal Club made it a hat-trick of successes as they knocked off the strong South Coast Taipans, 6-2 down on the south coast. That success makes it 19 goals in their three wins led by Vanessa Ciabatti’s brace, duly deputised by single scores from Ashleigh Krenich, Sophia Hamilton, Mia Conners and Kayia Buchanan put them into the top four. Taipans found their returns from a Danielle Wise double, the loss made it two games without a win now, headed into a game against SD Raiders.
