SELECT Futsal Premier League 2 Open Women’s continues to be a battle in two, as Raiders Futsal and Boomerangs FS continue to pile up the victories. Alongside them in this week’s edition, saw SD Raiders and South Coast Taipans take the spoils in another entertaining weekend of action. Let’s get onto the review.

Match of the Round: Sydney Futsal Club 2 defeated by South Coast Taipans 8

South Coast Taipans have swept to third in the competition, after a Danika Matos haul led them to thorough 8-2 victory against lowly Sydney Futsal Club, Saturday evening at the National Centre of Indigenous Centre.

It was a wonderful day out for Matos. She struck four goals in the rout, alongside a brace from Elise Battin helped them equal their highest scoring effort of the season. Danielle Wise scored her ninth of the season alongside a Kya Stewart strike to move into third. For Sydney Futsal Club, they have started to lose grip of the rest of the competition at the bottom, five points adrift now.

Sydney were the first to fire a shot in anger. Hannah-Rose Davey was given enough space in the third minute to launch an effort from past halfway which was comfortably watched by the Taipans keeper.

Taipans responded with the first goal of the contest. Down the right, on the overlap, the ball fell to Elise Battin, who finished off the movement on the second bite, making it 1-nil to the visitors.

The game remained cagey, as both sides looked to hold onto possession. Taipans remained patient with the ball, waited for their opening which fell to Rilee Wagner. The attacker scooped her effort over the bar as the game thundered on.

South Coast piled on a pair of goals midway through the half to establish their dominance in the contest. Kya Stewart played a smart one-two with Cayla Constable which teed up the former to slot home for the second goal.

That was followed up in the 19th minute when bright work down the right channel released the ball quickly which found its way to the back post, where Danika Matos clipped home, for a more representative 3-nil score line for the visitors.

Sydney did have a chance to reduce the deficit just before the break, Ramona Spicer pounced on a defensive mistake from the Taipans but some sharp work from the Taipans keeper prevented Spicer from making it count.

The home side followed up that chance, with the first effort of the second half. Rochelle Johnson cushioned a pass well before she turned well, angled a shot wide of the post.

Battin completed her brace for the Taipans in the 29th minute. Again, she linked well with Constable before she set off on a mazy run through the defence, to slot home 4-nil.

The Taipans started to run riot after their fourth, Danika Matos finished off a one-two for the fifth then slotted home a spot kick, for the Taipans sixth of the evening. South Coast found their scoring boots again after a lean run in recent weeks.

It was a three-minute battering for Matos. Combining with Wise which opened up the space, Matos finished the chance with aplomb, for 7-nil, seventh heaven for Taipans.

The striker surged up the scoring charts with her efforts on Saturday. She added a smooth near post finish to add the eighth goal for South Coast Taipans.

There was late joy for Sydney Futsal Club. A rare two-on-one situation created by Tanya Marjanovic and Amelia Rader, saw the latter slide the ball home, 8-1.

It was double delight for the home side, as Tanya Marjanovic, buoyed by her assist arrowed a powerful shot at a narrow angle, made it 8-2. On a grey day for the home side, that brought them some delight despite the scoreboard.

Rest of Round 7 Matches

Another week another large score posted by Boomerangs FS. Despite missing some key personnel, they walloped West City Crusaders, 9-1 at AIS Training Halls. Alex Martens led the way with a second half hat-trick while Madeleine Perceval got herself a brace, taking her to five goals for the season. Ellen Brown chipped in with a pair of goals alongside Olivia Gurney and Stella De Marco’s strikes in their fifth straight success. Coach Kristin Collins has eyed off their next two fixtures as key to staving off the challengers for the Premiership title.

Their main challenger, Raiders Futsal Club strolled to a success against Sydney City Eagles, although they were made to work for the points Saturday evening at Michael Clarke Recreation Centre. In a tight first half, Kaiya Buchanan and Vanessa Ciabatti found the net for Raiders whilst Jessica Curtale and Tameeka Thomson were the scorers for the Eagles.

The visitors ran away with the second half, Alyssa Marco nailed home a double, alongside single goals for Cassidy Chidgey and Amanda Lauric hit them for six. Eagles missed their key weapon in Jessica Beale, as Raiders set up for a mouth-watering fixture against Boomerangs FS next Saturday.

Down the other end of the table, SD Raiders put a cushion between themselves and the bottom, in a 6–2 success against a Phoenix Futsal Club side that tumbled out of the top four. Vesna Milivojevic starred in the contest, she fired home four goals, in the absence of striker partner, Catherine Cannuli. The haul took her tally to nine for the season, Jami-Lee Mussett and Sabrina Toro rounded off the blitzed effort from the SD Raiders for their second win of the season. For Phoenix Futsal Club, Isobel Gomez scored twice for some consolation, as they dropped like a stone in recent weeks.
