The Premiers have been crowned for 2018, and the top four picture is starting to finally take shape as three of the four spots have been secured.

It leaves South Coast Taipans and SD Raiders FC to fight for the final place after a hectic weekend of SELECT Futsal Premier League 2 action. Let’s get onto the review!

Match of the Round: Raiders FC 3 defeated South Coast Taipans 2

Raiders FC were dramatic 3-2 winners against a gallant South Coast Taipans in a gripping contest between top four rivals at Thomas Hassell Anglican College on Saturday evening.

The home side weren’t at their usual fluid best across the contest, but they showed some tremendous courage and spirit to score a third through Alyssa Marco and not settle for a 2-2 draw after they were pegged back by the Taipans. Cassidy Chidgey and Hannah Voloder provided the other two goals in the performance.

Across the contest, Taipans did a brilliant job stifling the Raiders attack and they showed their heart in coming back from 2-nil down against one of the competition heavyweights. Elise Battin and Danika Matos were the goal scorers but the visitors might rue some missed chances in a knife-edge first half.

The visitors had a sting to their attack early in the contest. Danika Matos had their first shot then Kya Stewart popped up with a fizzed effort that cracked wide of the post.

Hannah Voloder looked to spark the home side, she rolled a defender well before firing wide then turned provider with a diagonal ball for Amanda Lauric to hook inside for Mia Conners to poke wide.

Cassidy Chidgey followed up with a strong effort that is gathered by the keeper. Vanessa Ciabatti had a chance from the kick-in, that curved over the bar, as Raiders FC started to find their rhythm in the contest.

As the game started to open up, Taipans top scorer Danielle Wise was denied by Mariella Hurtado in the Raiders FC net then fellow attacker Emilia Skopal suffered the same fate as the shot stopper kept the game locked at 0-0.

Her brave efforts were reward as Cassidy Chidgey opened the scoring, just before half-time. Taipans were unable to clear their lines, which invited Chidgey to smash home the goal, 1-nil.

Skopal had a chance to respond right away, she was turned well on-goal by a team-mate but her fierce effort on goal, was swatted away by a determined Hurtado, as the game went to the break, with the home side having a 1-nil lead.

South Coast once again were quickest to start from the break, Wise cracked one against the post, Cayla Constable arrowed wide then Skopal couldn’t turn home at the near post, as the equaliser continued to evade them.

Voloder doesn’t need many chances to find the net. She turned well in close space to test the Taipans keeper before she doubled Raiders FC advantage. She pounced on an error from the defence then slotted home for 2-nil.

Taipans responded immediately through Elise Battin. A precise one-two had opened up the space for Battin, she poked home the ball, as the Taipans clawed within one, 2-1.

Kya Stewart with the Taipans tails up, had a pair of chances to make it 2-2. She thrashed the ball wide from a corner kick routine in the 40th minute then followed that up quick feet before she couldn’t find the finish.

The Taipans elected to go to the fifth man to give themselves more options in attack. Whilst it did leave them open for a narrow miss from Chidgey. The visitors found joy as they remained patient with the ball, which allowed Danika Matos to rifle home, as they looked to have secured a valiant point, 2-2.

Football is a cruel contest, in the euphoria of their celebration, Raiders FC broke upfield for one final attack. Lauric combined well with Marco, the latter tapped home to spark wild celebrations from the home crowd, as the side secured a 3-2 win.

Afterwards Raiders FC coach, Bernard Voloder remarked on the spirit in his squad this season, and found these contests much more fulfilling than their heavy victories earlier this season.

“The courage of this side is remarkable, the heart and ability to play for each other right until the end is great compared to the previous years. The girls wanted the win and they got that late in the contest,” said Voloder.

“You learn more from these games than those that you win 6 or 7-nil. It gives you a challenge when losing to get it back or when you’re leading to hold onto that. In the end, it is a mental exercise which we passed tonight.” finished Voloder.

Rest of Round 12 Results

Congratulations to Boomerangs FS. Their 4-2 victory against SD Raiders FC down at AIS Training Halls on Saturday afternoon has handed them the SELECT Futsal Premier League 2 Premiership with two games to spare. Boomerangs FS started the contest with a first half onslaught, Stella De Marco, Rachael Corbett and Eleanor Raymond all found the net to make it 3-nil at the break. Raymond added a second after the break to take her total to five for the season. For the visiting SD Raiders FC, Vesna Milivojevic took her goal return to 20 for the season with another on Saturday whilst Paulina Labra also found the net in the second half.

Speaking of the top four, third place Phoenix Futsal Club kept on their scoring ways as they thrashed Sydney City Eagles, 6-1 at PCYC Hornsby for their fifth game unbeaten. No surprise to see Hannah Mcnulty on the scoresheet, the sharpshooter added two more goals to her impressive tally but the spotlight in this Round 12 contest is on Sarah Moore, with her hat-trick alongside Isabella Hopkins strike to round off the five-goal margin. For the sorry Eagles, Montana Bolzan found a second half consolation which most likely sees them out of the top four equation with two weeks left.

West City Crusaders might not feature in the equation either, but they will take some pride in their 8-1 flogging off Sydney Futsal Club at Hawkesbury Indoor Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The result puts them into double figures for points this season and they did so in style. Kaitlin took top honours with a hat-trick while both Dione King and Hollie Wilson netted braces on the goal-filled afternoon. Stefanie Trovato was the odd woman out with a single goal as Crusaders broke a run of five-straight defeats with their highest return for the season. Rochelle Johnson found the consolation goal for Sydney as they inch closer to the end of a miserable season.
