Gladesville Hornsby Football Association prepares for huge season ahead
Whether you are five years old or 45, from Hunters Hill or Galston, male or female, or whatever your fitness level and ability, the Gladesville Hornsby Football Association (GHFA) has a football team and competition for you.
The GHFA is proud of the sporting opportunities it is able to provide to a wide section of the community. And the range of people able to take on the game is growing by the year with the introduction of several new competitions.
Walking football – a slower version of the game which is played at walking pace with modified rules, was introduced by the association in 2018 and has become one of the highlights of the football calendar in the local area.
The initiative saw 20 players sign up in the first season and Gladesville Hornsby Football Association General Manager Mark Lockie is expecting the walking football game to grow in 2019.
“We played matches one night a week and all the players who took part were very enthusiastic and want to continue into 2019,” he said.
“The players are probably evenly divided between those who have played previously but have retired from competition and newcomers. We are considering organising a “Division 1” for those who have played previously to account for the different skill levels and competitiveness.
“We will be targeting retirees and senior community groups to grow the numbers next year.”
As well as new opportunities created by walking football, even players who find themselves too busy to play on weekends will find a new competition to their liking this season.
The new six-a-side lunchtime competition kicks off this season, getting underway on January 30.
Hosted at the association’s home base at Christie Park, the new competition will provide a fantastic lunchtime work out.
The lunchtime competition is perfectly suited to local corporate teams looking for a fun and unique approach to team building, or just for players looking to scratch their itch to play football in between weekends.
Competition matches are played on Wednesdays between 12pm and 1.30 pm, with each match running for 30 minutes.
If you don’t have a team to play in, individuals can enter themselves and the association will help you find a team to play in.

Of course, while these competitions are fantastic additions to the GHFA’s offering, there is still plenty of traditional football action available for all would-be players.
