Wollongong United FC Become Robertson Cup Champions for the First Time
Wollongong United FC were crowned Robertson Cup champions after a convincing 3-nil victory over Glenmore Park FC this afternoon at Valentine Sports Park.
The side from Wollongong had an early signal of intent when James Stojanovski rattled the bar with a fourth minute effort.
Wollongong United FC made their fast start count after 13 minutes when a laid off free-kick came to the foot of Daniel Cunzolo, the attackers effort flew into the net via a deflection to send those clad in red into raptures, 1-nil.
Three minutes later, Wollongong United FC had their second. Ky Simpson was taken down in the box for a penalty. Anthony Krsteski took the spot kick and despite the save from the Glenmore Park keeper it trickled in for 2-nil.
Glenmore Park FC had a chance to respond when Liam Hamilton was sent through on goal from a slide pass but he couldn’t lift the finish past Wollongong United FC’s keeper Zak Bedelovski.
Chances were at a premium for Glenmore Park FC. Nathan Jackson had a chance from a free-kick that blazed wide then Matthew Skelly’s dinked effort just before the half was swatted away.
In a cagey second half, both sides had strong headers denied. Jack Saxby for Glenmore Park FC and a Wollongong effort was taken as it was headed for the top corner.
As Glenmore Park FC had to push men forward to get back into the contest, Wollongong United FC delivered the killer blow. A quick counter attack ended up with James Sekuloski sliding home for 3-nil.
The full-time whistle saw the Wollongong United FC faithful stream onto the pitch to celebrate as they clinched the Robertson Cup this season.
