Match of the Round: Sydney City Eagles 3 defeated South Coast Taipans 2

Sydney City Eagles took the spoils in a dramatic Match of the Round clash 3-2 against South Coast Taipans on Saturday night at Michael Clarke Recreation Centre.

The Eagles bounced back from their back-to-back losses with a gritty performance. Lachlan Rose kept up his red-hot form with his goal then twin strikes from Sam Perre and Michael Cimino in the second half were enough to take the three points. Sydney City Eagles remain sat in third spot despite their recent blip of form.

For the Taipans, they find themselves on the wrong side of key moments in recent weeks which has them on the outside looking into the top four. Cody Waller equalised in the first half as did Tyson Black to get them to 2-2. Taipans had some gilt-edge chances but a late red card to Waller cruelled their comeback as they fell to back-to-back defeats.

The tempo of this contest was set in the opening 60 seconds as Klime Sekutkoski from kick-off weaved through the Eagles defense and shot wide of the goal. Eagles responded through Michael Cimino poking wide in the fifth.

Sekutkoski almost hit the Eagles on the break in the sixth minute but fizzed it wide of the post as the visitors looked to get themselves off to the perfect start to put the last two weeks behind them quickly.

Soon Sydney City Eagles settled into the contest and started to take control of the ball. Lachlan Rose and Aaron Cimitile stung the palms of Taipans keeper Bradley Peryman with strikes then Rose slashed wide of the post.

It was third time lucky for Rose who struck the first goal of the contest. Some good combination work with mid-season signing Patrick Antelmi opened up the path for the blond attacker to nestle into the bottom corner for 1-nil.

Taipans wasted no time in response making it 1-1 in the 12th minute. Cody Waller rolled past the Eagles defensive structure and thrashed into the net to equalise and draw a roar from the traveling fans in the stands.

Giovanni Panuccio tried to push Taipans ahead but couldn’t finish off a slick move in the 16th but the Eagles continued to edge the chances. Sam Perre had a pair of shots saved near the end of the half as the two sides headed in locked up.

Both sides traded chances to open up the second with Rose going the closest with his two chances that were denied by Peryman. Next Patrick Antelmi continued to prove a handful with a hat-trick of chances that were also wasted.

With both sides resolute in defense, Sydney City Eagles went for a set piece to wrest back the lead. Sam Perre after his bright first half performance got on the scoresheet with a fierce strike that trickled in for 2-1.

In a small bout of déjà vu, Taipans responded immediately with their second goal of the contest. Tyson Black popped up to make it 2-2 with his well-taken goal as the Taipans looked to complete the double over the Eagles this season.

Knowing this was a vital three points, Sydney City Eagles pushed forward and had a Sam Perre deflected strike tipped over by another impressive stop from Peryman. Down the other end, evergreen shot stopper Zlatko Joseski put in a superman dive to deny Black.

Ultimately, it was some eyes-up futsal from the Eagles which got them the win. Antelmi and Rose combined again to forge open space to set up Cimino for the match-winner and a spectacular celebration for a 3-2 Eagles win.

Speaking afterwards Sydney City Eagles player Aaron Cimitile was delighted with the result and the defensive effort from the side against a tough Taipans side:

“South Coast always bring a good contest. We held well and defended well as a team, remained disciplined because Taipans like to move the ball but we did well to get the result. Look we couldn’t do it without him [Zlatko Joseski] and I hope he sticks with us so we have a good shot at the title.” said Cimitile.

For South Coast Taipans boss Bobby Mazevski was frustrated as another small margin didn’t go their way against a tough Eagles side:

“I’m a bit frustrated at the moment. Some of the fine things aren’t going our way. I told the boys it was going to be a fine game today and we were on the wrong end of it. I think we competed well, tried to win the game but you know, we have five games remaining and if we keep to that standard, we’ll make the finals.” said Mazevski.

Dural Warriors 5 defeated Phoenix Futsal Club 1

A second half blitz has helped Dural Warriors continue their sublime form with a 5-1 result against a gallant Phoenix Futsal Club side Saturday night at The Centre – Dural.

The first half was a tight tussle between the two sides. Wade Giovenali scored the only goal of the half in the 12th minute for Dural Warriors. Phoenix Futsal Club kept their energy high and matched the unbeaten opposition to go into the break down 1-nil.

Dural Warriors put their stamp on the contest. Sam De Oliveira and Wade Giovenali scored for Dural in the first 60 seconds quickly followed by Glen Kelshaw stretched their advantage to four. Thomas Louw pulled one back for Phoenix Futsal Club before Dural’s Wade Giovenali completed his hat-trick five minutes from the end of the contest.

That result caps another fruitful weekend for Dural Warriors after their mid-week 6-1 success against West City Crusaders. Dural Warriors sit nine points clear of the chasing pack with all their fixtures caught up and have them set up for a smooth journey in the final five weeks.

Sydney Futsal Club 5 drew with West City Crusaders 5

In the final game of Round 9 Sydney Futsal Club and West City Crusaders shared the points in a wild 5-5 draw at All Sorts Indoor Sports Centre on Saturday evening.

The first half left fans at All Sorts Indoor Sports Centre exhausted with eight goals shared between the two sides with 4-4 the score line at the break. Alexander Nicolosi took the headlines for Sydney Futsal Club with his first half hat-trick then a fourth in the second with Nathan Spinola the other man from the home side to find the net.

For West City Crusaders, the scoring was shared. Peter Malecki, Benjamin Lam and two goal scorers from last weekend Abdul Mohseni and James Law found the back of the net. Lam completed his brace in the second half in a much more subdued contest.

The result keeps the Crusaders unbeaten streak alive and within touching distance of the top four but it is slipping further away with the passing week. Sydney Futsal Club add a point to their tally as they move equal with Phoenix Futsal Club in ninth.
