Majik dazzle Quake
Mountain Majik pulled out the guns in a 3-0 Saturday-afternoon take-down of Campbelltown Quake at Hawkesbury Indoor Stadium.
Campbelltown had the first number of chances through Linda Dudek and Mel Walsh and the misses would later prove costly.
Mountain moved the ball well through Beth Gordon, Renee Tomkins and Tara Pender and a sneaky Ariella Cabezas saw her ghost into the D and make no mistake from close-range to put Mountain 1-0 up.
Not long after a half-break down the right from resulted in a Quake foul and freekick that Gordon struck well to force a save that bounced backed to her feet which she buried second time around to double the Majik advantage.
The home side were at it again moments later when veteran Tomkins potted in at the back-post and it was 3-0 at the break.
A more adamant Campbelltown led by young guns Caitlin Orridge, Keira Danes and Darcey Malone helped drive a second-half resurgence with little reward and Mountain held on for a vital win that kept them in the playoff hunt.
Following a frustrating start to the summer, last season’s grand-finalists Majik have rattled off three-straight wins to only be three points off third-placed Inner West, who they play next weekend at home.
It was also a great turnaround from their 5-4 Futsal Cup loss to PL2 side Raiders on Wednesday night.
A third Quake loss in the last five rounds had coach Mel Keith disappointed with the outcome.
“Although we were missing five regular squad players we had the numbers to perform better than what we did,” she said.
“Credit to the young girls Keira Danes, Maddie Malone, Rachel Bagot, Caitlin Orridge and Darcey Malone who were composed and contributed to our chances in the game.”
Boomerangs break Magic
Boomerangs FS saved up a devastating performance to grab their first-ever win over Inner West Magic, winning 5-zip at Valentine Sports Park on Saturday evening.
Michaela Day showed Inner West they were going to have to work hard when she scored in the fifth-minute to put Boomerangs ahead, Olivia Gurney extending the lead on the quarter-hour and Day netting another before halftime to lift the visitors a remarkable three goals up at the changeover.
Magic tried everything to get things going but fell further behind to a Madeleine Percival strike on the half-hour before Day completed her hat-trick to round out a 5-0 hiding – the second time Boomerangs have won a premier league match by that margin.
Day’s triple-effort is the joint-highest individual score from a Boomerangs player (Ashleigh Palombi scored three against Mascot in 2013/14) and the result pushed the Territorians into playoff consideration just three points off fourth-placed Easts, who they host next weekend.
Boomerangs coach Kristian Collins dipped his hat to a magnificent presentation from his side.
“Honestly, this is the type of performance we are capable of when everyone turns up to training and games each week.
It was really good,” he said.
“Defensive intensity set the tone early. We fought hard for everything and didn’t give Inner West an inch. We were able to capitalise on our dominance early which is something we haven’t been able to do this season so far.
“Once we got ahead, Inner West had to chase the game and we made sure we were super tight defensively and got two goals on the counter,” Collins said.
“We just need to get back on the track now and make sure we can continue this form on into the next four weeks.”
It was Inner West’s second five-goal loss this summer and a second-successive defeat on home turf – they’ve never lost three on the trot as the home side, and despite Magic edging Boomerangs five times in eight meetings (two draws), they’ve never managed to beat them at Valentine.
Coach Matteo Maiorana used a thesaurus in his match synopsis.
“Some of the words to describe our performance – lacklustre, poor, ill-disciplined. The performance was not good enough from a defending champion,” he said.
“Credit to Kristian [Collins] and his team. They were very organised, moved the ball quickly and with intent, and they defended brilliantly – the best defensive team we have played all season.”
Easts overcome Northside
Eastern Suburbs Hakoah pulled out a terrific match to beat high-flyers UTS Northside 4-2 at PCYC Dee Why on Saturday evening.
Easts led 3-1 at the break and traded second-half goals maintained their two-goal buffer to the final siren and see them catapult over UTS into fourth place on the points ladder. Their scorers were Lareane Bachega, Kiara Farquhar, Tamires Souza and Paloma Oliveira.
It was Hakoah’s third-straight win against Northside and the first time Easts have won two consecutive away outings – they’re also getting comfortable with a two-goal scoreline difference, a marker they’ve played out in 39% of their matches (winning five times and losing four).
Alexia Guerrinoni scored a double for UTS, but coach coach Danny Beauchamp wasn’t overly impressed by his team’s effort heading into their match against ladder-leaders Mascot next weekend.
“It was a disappointing game… the girls aren’t playing anywhere near their potential and in a tight competition you can’t have off weeks,” he said.
“We have a really tough Cup [versus Boomerangs] and League game this week to bounce back.”
Mascot edge Enfield
Table-toppers Mascot Vipers were made to sweat in a tight 2-0 Saturday-night victory versus bottom-side Enfield Allstars at Morris Iemma Indoor Sports Centre.
Mascot had plenty of chances but Enfield kept themselves in the game with a gritty effort.
Interestingly, Vipers have only managed seven goals in their last four runs – they scored that many in their opening-round win over defending champions Inner West.
