Round 7 Review – NPL 2 NSW Women’s

FROM-FOOTBALLER-TO-BAKER-35

This weekend’s edition of the National Premier Leagues 2 NSW Womens competition was filled to the brim with late drama. Late goals helped to change the landscape of the ladder and makes for a mouth-watering run home. Let’s get onto the review!

North Shore Mariners vs Nepean FC

North Shore Mariners stretched their unbeaten run to seven after a 4-1 success against a dogged Nepean FC side this afternoon at Northbridge Oval.

Braces to Evelyn Chronis in the first half and Siahn Bozanic in the second were enough to give North Shore Mariners their sixth straight win in this shortened season. Grant Lee’s side set themselves up well for their contest against Marconi Stallions next weekend.

Nepean FC can keep their head high after that contest. The young side matched wits in the first half and got themselves a goal through Imogen Lane. They were blown away by North Shore Mariners in the second 45 but it is another learned experience for the side.

On a bright, sunshine drenched North Shore afternoon both sides got into their work quickly. Eleni Bradley and Evelyn Chronis shot for the Mariners whilst Imogen Lane was a constant threat for the visitors in her work.

North Shore Mariners found the back of the net in similar fast fashion. Amelia Griffin cushioned a ball into the path of sharpshooter Chronis who slotted home for 1-nil.

Chronis made it double delight minutes later with a party piece. She rampaged down the right side before a cross-cum-shot floated into the net for 2-nil Mariners and Chronis’ 11th goal of the season.

Nepean FC weren’t deterred by the scoreline, fizzed passes around midfield and clawed a goal back in the 23rd minute. Lane found space on the edge of the box and rolled one underneath the keeper for 2-1.

That gave Nepean FC a spark and they created their best move but couldn’t find a finish then Tayla Chaplin weaved past several defenders, went near post and was denied by Mariners custodian Trudy Burke.

It was the home side that continued to pile up chances headed to the break. Chronis, Johnston and Gyzen all had shots which were repelled well by the Nepean FC defense as we headed to the break at 2-1 to the Mariners.

Coming back out for the second stanza, North Shore Mariners flashed out of the box again, with a header nodded wide in the 46th minute quickly followed by Nepean FC’s Aisling Davidson doing the same at the other end.

North Shore weren’t gun shy at the second opportunity. Some quick, incisive play put Siahn Bozanic through on goal. Bozanic sent her effort past Nepean FC custodian Sarah Easthope to stretch the advantage to 3-1.

Changes from Nepean FC roused them forward again. Bianca Galayini and Lane both had shots in the same sequence which Burke repelled. Next, Galayini almost met a free-kick at the right point but it flashed wide.

The Mariners added a fourth in the final ten minutes, again through Bozanic. She rifled one into the back of the net for 4-1 and three points in the bag for the home side. Nepean FC had a late chance for a consolation but the game drifted to it’s conclusion.

Speaking afterwards, North Shore Mariners coach Grant Lee was enthused from the effort from his side in hot conditions and how they unlocked the Nepean FC side:

“I thought today was quite good. Nepean was a good test as will next weekend against Marconi with the younger girls getting experience at this level. We limited them in opportunities in the warm weather and we keep ticking them over.” said Lee.

Nepean FC coach Alan Tasses was happy despite the defeat as the progression for his young side continued as they gave their best against one of the toughest sides in the NPL2 Womens competition:

“We ran out of legs there. A couple of small errors showed today but no excuses for the loss. Mariners are a good side and if you give them chances, they finish them.” said Tasses.

“I said to the girls at half-time we were in this game up to their eyeballs. We matched them well in the first half and forced them into a change of style. Unfortunately, we aren’t ready to do that for 90 minutes and got punished.” finished Tasses.

Inter Lions 1 defeated by Marconi Stallions 8

The Marconi Stallions warmed up for their top of the table clash next weekend with an 8-1 thrashing of Inter Lions this afternoon at Majors Bay Reserve.

It was one-way traffic from the opening whistle as the Stallions were ruthless in their pursuit of goals and led the contest 6-1 at the break. The visitors added a further two goals in the second half to confirm the rout.

Ceyda Cambaz took the headlines for Marconi. Cambaz piled in four goals in the contest to take her tally for the season to seven. Danielle Bishop got a hat-trick with Tania Baban scoring the other in the one-sided contest as coach Andy Severin called it a “well drilled performance as the front three got some rhythm and worked tirelessly in the heat.”

Inter Lions did find the back of the net in the first half but it was another forgettable afternoon for the home side. For the Stallions, they move onto a mouth-watering top of the table clash with North Shore Mariners next weekend.

UNSW FC 1 defeated by Sutherland Shire FA 2

It was a drama filled afternoon down at Seymour Shaw with Sutherland Shire FA last gasp 2-1 success against a fantastic UNSW FC side this afternoon.

Coming into this contest, both sides knew the high stakes and felt each other out in the first half which resulted in them being deadlocked at 0-0. Who else but Jordan Baker fired Sutherland Shire FA into the second half lead with a flying free-kick.

UNSW FC responded quickly through Zoe Bartley. The Students attacker went on a mazy run from halfway before she hit top bins from 25 yards out to make it 1-1. It would be heartbreak for the Students when the visitors again found the back of the net in the 93rd minute through Janan Codmani.

That result keeps Sutherland Shire FA’s unbeaten run going for another week as they cement their spot in the top portion of the National Premier Leagues 2 NSW Womens table. For UNSW FC coach Steve Greenwood he admitted a “draw would’ve been a fair result.”

St George FC 2 drew with Central Coast Mariners 2

St George FC snatched a point late on in a pulsating 2-2 draw against Central Coast Mariners this afternoon at St George Stadium.

Both sides were on guard to find some form in the hot conditions down at Rockdale. It was Central Coast that were the brighter of the two sides in the first 45 minutes. The Mariners led 2-nil at the break, thanks to a pair of goals.

In the conditions, St George FC dug deep and got themselves back in the contest through Alicia Lee to make it 2-1. The Saints kept coming and got reward late in the contest when Tully Mcevoy fired home an equaliser for a dramatic draw.

Taking post-match St George FC coach Mark Cuppit was delighted with the effort from his side throughout the contest and their desire to grab the equaliser. For Mariners coach Dan Barrett this afternoon was another opportunity lost in a shortened season for his side.
