Synthetic Boom in the City of Sydney

The City of Sydney are constructing five new synthetic fields across the LGA over the next few years.

Council is increasing recreation and sporting opportunities across the LGA to meet the need of the growing communities.

This includes increasing the play at City of Sydney sports fields by 16,000 hours by 2030 – that’s nearly 2 years of continuous playing hours.

The fields in Zetland, Annandale, Alexandria and Rosebery and two in Alexandria will give locals more opportunity to play sports and keep active more often throughout the year.

Perry Park, Alexandria Park Community School and Turruwul Park will be three of the five venues where FIFA certified synthetic field will be built ready for the 8,000+ registered football players to enjoy.

Football NSW CEO Stuart Hodge looked forward to seeing more facilities supporting football implemented within the next few years.

“Synthetic fields can significantly increase the number of active people within a community.

“This supports the achievement of improved social, health, environmental and economic benefits for the community.

“The NSW Football Infrastructure Strategy is focused on identifying and understanding the infrastructure required to support and sustain community football over the coming decade.”

The City of Sydney have identified through their study of open spaces, recreation and sport needs that Council needed to increase the capacity of existing sport fields and build new ones to meet the growing demand.

In the Eastern Suburbs Football Association (ESFA) the pitch to population ratio is 2,645 participants higher than the Sydney metropolitan average, meaning that the supply of pitches in the ESFA area (based on population) is significantly lower than the average provision across Sydney.

The introduction of three new full sized FIFA Quality fields in the Eastern Suburbs FA coupled with the hosting of the FIFA Women’s World Cup in just over two years’ time will mean that ESFA will be able to manage the increase of females that will be playing the world game in the coming years.

A synthetic surface can be played on intensively and extensively throughout all weather conditions which means more people, more active, more often.
