With Mother’s Day less than ten days away, a story from the local football community is highlighting how the game can bring families closer together, not just on the pitch, but in life.

Newly appointed Football South Coast CEO Amanda Marino and her son Liam share more than just a love of football.

They are now both pursuing coaching pathways, deepening their connection through the sport that has long been part of their lives.

Earlier this year, Liam took a significant step in his journey by attending a coaching course at Valentine Sports Park, a milestone moment that reflects both his personal growth and the influence of his mother.

For Amanda, coaching has always been about more than tactics and results.

“What I enjoy most is seeing growth. not just in ability, but in confidence,” she said.

“Watching players develop belief in themselves, take on challenges, and genuinely enjoy the game is incredibly rewarding. It’s not always about the wins; it’s about those moments where something clicks for them, and you know you’ve played a small part in that journey.”

Balancing her responsibilities as a CEO, coach, and mother hasn’t always been easy, but Amanda sees football as something that has unified rather than divided her family life.

“It’s definitely a juggle at times, and there are moments where it feels like a constant balancing act,” she said.

“But for me, coaching has always been a part of our family life rather than something separate from it… it’s something we’ve all embraced together.”

One of the most meaningful parts of that journey has been watching Liam step into coaching himself.

“It’s incredibly special,” Amanda said.

“To see him not only love the game but also step into coaching and want to give back — that’s something I’m really proud of.”

For Liam, his mum has been a constant source of support and motivation throughout his football journey.

“Mum has always been there for me, no matter what,” he said.

“She pushes me to work hard but also backs me when things don’t go my way… she is a big reason why I’ve kept improving and enjoying football.”

Now sharing the same coaching perspective has brought them even closer.

“It’s actually been really good,” Liam said.

“We talk about football a lot more now… I’ve also realised how much work goes into coaching, so I respect what she does even more now.”

As Mother’s Day approaches, the Marino family’s story is a reminder that football is more than just a game, it’s a powerful way to connect, inspire, and grow together across generations.
