Seymour Shaw Park No. 2 received a lighting upgrade prior to the 2021 season thanks to the Sutherland Shire Council and the Football NSW Let’s Light Up Football Fund.

The project included the replacement of four new floodlighting poles, reinforced footings, and new LED lamps on the new poles.

Miranda Magpies Football Club now have a field that meets the Australian Lighting Standards (100 lux) for training and night competition.

Football NSW’s Manager Government Relations, Funding and Infrastructure, Daniel Ristic was delighted to see yet another project receive an upgrade it thoroughly needed.

“It’s fantastic to see the Let’s Light Up Football Fund continuing to deliver such amazing projects to the community.

“Lighting assists in discouraging high participation use in well lit areas and spreads training loads evenly, better managing field wear and required maintenance.

“In NSW only 21% of playing fields have 100 lux (or greater) lighting that is considered suitable for community competition football.”

Key objectives of the Let’s Light Up Football Fund were to improve the experience for players, referees, coaches, administrators and spectators and provide an inviting and safe environment to participate which is exactly what this project has achieved for the Miranda Magpies.

Demand to play the world game rises each year.

The latest Ausplay statistics (April 2021) has football as the largest team-based sport in Australia with over 1.8 million participants.

Field 2 at Seymour Shaw also received a full field renovation which will assist the club in providing a quality surface for its 1,000 plus players.

Sutherland Shire Football Association (SSFA) local infrastructure strategy is focused on improving capacity through increased lighting.

Two thirds of football fields in the Shire do not meet the 50 lux Australian Lighting Standards required for football.

This project along with Solander Playing fields lighting upgrade and further projects planned for the Sutherland region (Box Rd Oval and Kareela Playing Field) will greatly assist SSFA in meeting their infrastructure goals.
