Onwards and upwards for the Eastern Suburbs FA

After a disrupted winter season in 2021, the Eastern Suburbs Football Association (ESFA) has proven that nothing can stop football.

After a summer football program bursting at the seams with exciting competitions and great football on display, the ESFA is excited for a bigger and better winter season in 2022.

Head of Competitions Greg Storey said that the power of football was its accessibility and that the Association’s goal for 2022 was to ensure the sport remained open to all.

“Whether you’re five or 50, there’s a club, team and a competition for you,” he said.

“We have Men’s competitions on Saturday and Sunday to accommodate all schedules, whilst we also run a wide range of Women’s, youth and MiniRoos competitions.”

With 24 clubs and over 9,100 players, football for all is more than just a catchphrase in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney.

With ESFA experiencing incredible growth in its female contingent of players in recent years, Storey said the Association was not just focussed on bringing new, young players into the system in the youngest age groups, but also ensuring there were new opportunities for older women either coming into the game for the first time or looking to continue their participation in the sport.

To that end, the inclusion of a new over-30s women’s competition has been crucial.

“The over-30s competition is a fairly recent inclusion and I think it’s just helped a lot of our older players who have been playing football for a long time continue to participate in a different setting,” he said.

“As some of these players get a bit older, they might not want to play in open age competition with girls who are a lot younger than them.

“Our over-30s competitions are still great competitions with some great football on display, but they’re a great option for players who want to play with players of a similar age.

“It’s all part of the pathway. Now we can cater for girls from the age of five right through to their teen years, their 20s and beyond.”

It is a similar story on the boys’ side of the draw, with MiniRoos catering for children five and up, progressing into Youth, Open Age and over-35 and over-45 competitions.

ESFA also offers a Skills Acquisition Programs for the talented players discovered within its ranks, offering opportunities for further development while enjoying their club football within the ESFA competitions.
