Football NSW League One outfit St George FC have appointed Nefta Gonzalez as the club’s new head coach for the 2023 season replacing former Socceroo Mark Milligan who has since moved on as the assistant coach at Adelaide United.

Gonzalez was born in Barcelona, Spain and from 1992 to 2017 he was involved with FC Barcelona as the youth captain for seven years representing the club in National and International Competitions.

Gonzalez began his coaching journey with FC Barcelona and was involved in their International Academy.

Over the past five years the well travelled coach has gained experience in the NPL NSW Men’s competitions at Mounties Wanderers, Sutherland Sharks, and Sydney Olympic.

“Being approached by a club with the history of St George FC and learning about the project to rebuild this important club, I was immediately attracted and motivated by the proposal, and the process was very professional,” Gonzalez stated in the club’s official press statement.

Nefta is a student of the game, a coach that focuses on all the details, and feels instant synergy with the club’s current playing style and direction.

“I have reviewed all the games and observed a team extremely well worked with the potential and ability to continue progressing. I want to add my experience and footballing ideas to compliment the fantastic work that Mark has already achieved with his technical team.”

The Spaniard is very impressed with the club’s philosophy of promoting youth and the foundational pillars in place to fulfil the club’s vision.

Having been educated at one of the finest Footballing institutions in the world, Gonzalez understands the need to invest in youth and firmly believes this represents the future for St George FC.

“During the conversation with Jane (Talcevski) and Bruce (Spiteri), I received a clear picture and understanding of how the club is evolving, and I feel privileged to have the responsibility of 1st team coach, but I will also be lending my support to fellow coaches in youth development.”

Mark Milligan will join A-League team, Adelaide United from July 4th, therefore Nefta will be taking over coaching responsibilities until the end of the current season.

While the club is disappointed to lose Mark it is the next step for Mark on his coaching journey. Marks’ predecessor Greg King was given an opportunity to work with Kevin Muscat in Yokohama. The St George club is proud to have helped in some way Mark and Greg in their careers.
