Round 9 in the Futsal Premier League 2 Open Womens competition was another weekend filled with goals and exciting futsal results across Saturday.

The race for the top four continues to be closely fought and should head down to the wire.

Let’s get onto the review!

Sydney City Eagles 4 defeated SD Raiders Futsal 3

Sydney City Eagles had a stirring comeback in their 4-3 win over SD Raiders Futsal at Thomas Hassell Anglican College on Saturday afternoon.

The Eagles showed their spirit in the comeback win and moved into third spot on the FPL2 Open Womens ladder. Emma Voloder fired home a brace after the opener from Alyssa Zuvela and another goal from Christa Oliva.

SD Raiders Futsal were in control taking a 3-1 lead into the break but were unable to hold onto their lead and lost the game. Ashlie Crofts scored a pair of goals for the visitors while Ellie-Leigh Lontis was their other goal scorer.

This was a big game for both sides to press their finals credentials and the game was played at a quick speed to open. SD Raiders Futsal had the first two chances through Ellie-Leigh Lontis and Mikala Tucker which were wide.

Despite that, it was Sydney City Eagles who struck first. Alyssa Zuvela found some space and rocketed a low shot which flew into the net for 1-0.

SD Raiders Futsal responded with their first goal of the game within 60 seconds. This one came from Lontis who fired home herself to make it 1-1 in a quick game.

The Eagles had a pair of chances to take back the lead but Zuvela’s effort whacked against the post then Elena Antic shot straight at SD Raiders Futsal keeper Caitlin Britton.

The mid-season signing Ashlie Crofts found her way into the game, taking the ball and thrashing her effort wide of the net.

Crofts was on target with her second effort of the game. She held off her defender well and whipped the ball home to make it 2-1 for SD Raiders Futsal.

The game started to swing like a pendulum between the two sides late in the first half. Eagles almost turned the ball into the net from a kick-in then both Tucker and Sarah Mandile were denied for the visitors.

SD Raiders Futsal would take a two-goal advantage into the break. Crofts stepped up to smash home a free-kick after it was set up by a teammate to make it 3-1 at halftime.

Coming out of the break, the Eagles got the best possible start. They cut open the SD Raiders Futsal defence before it fell to the foot of Emma Voloder to make it 3-2.

The goal buoyed the Eagles who started to take control of the game. They levelled the game with ten minutes left to play when Christa Oliva swept the ball home for 3-3.

Both sides surged forward to find the winner in the game. Melina Manna almost caught out the keeper with a free-kick from deep but it was blocked away.

It was the hosts who took the spoils late in the contest. Once again, it was Voloder who lifted an effort into the roof of the net to make it 4-3 and a vital win for the Eagles.

Post game a happy Sydney City Eagles coach Anthony Tomelic praised the side’s work in the second half to comeback and take the win:

“I thought we did a lot better this week. We started off slow but the girls worked to the structure and fought hard to come back. We made sure to keep up our intensity and keep the opponents moving which saw us get the win.” said Tomelic.

For SD Raiders Futsal coach Matias Paz he lamented a second half collapse from the side which saw them lose the game:

“I thought we dominated the whole game but got tired. We got too carried away and tried to find goals behind but we got unlucky. I thought we had a good performance overall.” said Paz.

South Coast Taipans 6 defeated Raiders Futsal Club 1

The weekend rounded off with South Coast Taipans 6-1 win against Raiders Futsal Club at Illawarra Hockey Centre on Saturday night.

Their other goal scorers were Megan Grew who got the opener keeping up her form and making it six goals for the season. Christina Videla and Abigail Jordan scored either side of half-time to round out the score sheet for them.

This result makes it three games without a win for Raiders Futsal Club and sees them drop outside of the top four for the first time in a while. Nicole Ossio scored their lone goal in the second half to keep them from being blanked.
