The opportunities from the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup™ are immense and now is the time to prepare were the key messages to various Central Coast Football clubs at the Legacy ’23 function on the Central Coast.

Football NSW’s Legacy Team hosted the event prior to the Matildas 2-0 victory over Thailand on the Central Coast. Clubs in attendance were shown the plan to leverage the home World Cup to grow football in their communities next year.

Fourteen Central Coast Football clubs including Avoca, Barnstoneworth United, Berkeley Vale, Budgewoi, Doyalson-Wyee, Gosford City, Kanwal, Kariong United, Kincumber Roos, Ourimbah United, Terrigal United, Umina United, Wyoming and Wyong Emus all were present in what was a great evening for women’s football.

“The Matildas match at Central Coast Stadium was a perfect pre-match event to introduce the Legacy Funding opportunities to our Central Coast clubs and encourage them to start preparations now for the 2023 season,” said Football NSW Football’s Legacy Plan Manager, Helen Armson.

“Emceed by Football Australia’s Junior Matildas Head Coach Rae Dower and attended by two ex-Matildas Julie Dolan and Heather Garriock, it was a great chance for clubs to hear firsthand the impact of the rise in popularity and growth in women’s football that is taking place.

“Attendees got an insight into FA’s legacy and club development plans, Football NSW’s scholarship opportunities in the fields of refereeing, coaching and volunteering and a better understanding of the Daughter and Dad’s football program.

“Given the history of ‘World Cup Effects’, we know grassroots participation will increase across NSW especially with the FIFA Men’s World Cup commencing next week and leading into the FIFA Women’s World Cup on home soil in July next year so it’s time to mobilise the team to cater for the demand.

“This is a unique time to transform and grow clubs particularly in the female space with the range of opportunities including infrastructure upgrades and participation programs via Office of Sport Legacy Funding grants; player development and community programs like Kick off for Girls, Kick on for Women, Girls love Football and Daughters and Dads and administrative scholarships to encourage an increase in female volunteering and leadership roles.”
