35 goals were scored in another frantic Round 11 in the Futsal Premier League 2 Open Mens competition which saw Raiders Futsal Club take top spot. West City Crusaders, SD Raiders Futsal, Raiders Futsal Club and Sydney City Eagles took the spoils on Saturday. Let’s get onto the review!

West City Crusaders 5 defeated South Coast Taipans 2

West City Crusaders took a big scalp in their 5-2 win over South Coast Taipans at PCYC Hawkesbury on Saturday afternoon.

The Crusaders bounced back from their midweek loss with a huge win which coach Joe Perri thought was a long time coming for them. Jacob Newman got a double while Harry Drew, Ryan Faulkner and Alexander Murrell were the other goal scorers.

South Coast Taipans will be disappointed to not take the points after they led 2-0 after 20 minutes of the contest before they were beaten. Matthew Mazevski and Klime Sekutkoski were the two Taipans who found the net in the first half.

On a warm afternoon, the game started in fast fashion. Both teams had shots within the opening 60 seconds with Kurt Elborough going close for Crusaders.

It was the Taipans who struck first. Matthew Mazevski was on the end of a quick passing move from the visitors and tapped home for 1-0.

Looking to respond, Elborough was the main outlet for the Crusaders. He had a free-kick flash wide then forced Taipans keeper Riley Nicholl into a good save.

Taipans were able to withstand that pressure and doubled their delight in the 20th minute. Jayden Makowski finished off the move on the counter to make it 2-0.

Crusaders finished the high trying to fight back. Ryan Faulkner swept wide from a passing move then he followed up with rattling the post before the break.

The hosts did pull a goal back before half-time through Jacob Newman. He showed some good strength to hold off a defender then drilled the ball home to make it 2-1.

Coming out of the break, Crusaders felt just fine. They equalised quickly from the restart to make it 2-2 when Alexander Murrell found the back of the net.

All the momentum was with West City Crusaders after the equaliser. Harry Drew was denied the first time on the counter before he poked home to give them the lead at 3-2.

While they were ahead, Crusaders did have their keeper Guy Lee to thank for preserving the lead. The custodian who was involved in the attack across the game, made a fabulous double save.

Taipans continued to push forward to find an equaliser of their own. Cody Waller unfurled a shot which had to be turned over the bar by Lee.

Crusaders gave themselves a two-goal advantage soon after. Faulkner was on the end of another quick counter move and made it 4-2.

They made it 5-3 quickly after that and put the contest to bed. It was a superb free-kick from Newman who whipped it past the wall and into the net for the Crusaders fifth goal.

The Taipans were given a lifeline back into the game when Waller was fouled for a penalty. Mazevski stepped up for the spot kick but rattled the post to a roar from the home supporters.

The game drifted towards the final whistle, as Crusaders held onto their three-goal advantage. Tyson Black had a shot saved while Faulkner hit the frame for Crusaders in the last minute.

Post match West City Crusaders coach Joe Perri was delighted to see his side put it all together and pick up a win over the Taipans:

“Finally! It was good to see what we are capable of which made me very happy today. It has been a long time coming this result for us especially after the mid-week game. We got back to 2-2 then fell away so to bounce back is wonderful.” said Perri.

For South Coast Taipans coach Bobby Mazevski, he was disappointed in the side who fell away after they led by a pair of goals in the first half:

“It is very disappointing result for us. We started the game well and led before we gave them a goal to get back in the game. They stung us with three quick goals and we never really recovered from that tonight.” said Mazevski.
