Grab the whistle and take up Refereeing today
Football NSW’s recently appointed Referees Coordinator Nick Young is urging anyone interested in refereeing to give it a go for the 2023 season as the search for more much needed officials begins.
Without referees we simply have no game and with the FIFA Men’s World Cup taking shape shortly and the FIFA Women’s World Cup next year, participation numbers will increase meaning there will be more demand on requiring officials for games.
“Referees are the third team on the pitch and are a crucial part of the modern game,” said Young.
“Players, coaches and spectators are always pleased when they show up to a match and see three referees ready to go for their match.
“Without a referee the footballing experience is greatly lessened by all stakeholders involved.”
Beginning his refereeing experience in 1998 officiating small-sided matches, Young first got involved as a means to earn pocket money but from there developed a true love for it where it has seen him hold positions as a referee coach and instructor as well as being involved with his local committee.
“Refereeing has given me many things in life.
“My advice to anyone thinking about getting involved is giving this a go.
“It is enjoyable, challenging, a good way to stay fit and a lot of fun.
“You develop a lot of skills that will help you throughout your life such as quick decision making, communication and resilience to name a few.
“Additionally, it’s also not a bad way to earn a few bucks for a few hours on the weekend.”
