Round 13 Review – Futsal Premier League 2 Open Men’s
Round 13 in the Futsal Premier League 2 Open Mens competition saw the top four be locked in while there is the Premiership up for grabs next week. We had four games this weekend filled with goals and drama befitting a penultimate weekend. Let’s get onto the review.
SD Raiders Futsal 3 defeated by Boomerangs FS 5
Boomerangs FS secure their spot in the top four with a 5-3 win over SD Raiders Futsal in a pulsating contest at Fairfield Youth and Community Centre on Saturday.
SD Raiders Futsal come out of this contest feeling a bit unlucky after they spurned many chances in the game and had brought it back to 3-3 at one point. Matthew Barkho got a pair while captain Simon Nicholas also slotted home.
For Boomerangs FS, this is a huge win for the Canberra side and will see them make the finals with a week to spare. Nicholas Dahl led the way with a brace while Maxx Green, Benjamin Basser Silk and an own goal rounded out the scoring.
In a game where both teams were keen for the three points. It was a see-sawing opening to the contest which saw the two custodians – Daniel Ibrahim for SD Raiders Futsal and Ashley Collins for Boomerangs FS – produced some big saves to keep the score at 0-0.
Boomerangs FS were the first side to trouble the scoreboard. A wonderful run from Callum Smith opened up the space and cut it back to Nicholas Dahl to make it 1-0.
SD Raiders Futsal might be behind but they continued to pile on the pressure in attack for the equaliser. They were wasteful in front of the goal but the hosts have been a side that can generate comebacks quickly this season.
It was double delight for Dahl who made it 2-0 for Boomerangs FS. He swooped on an errant pass from the SD Raiders Futsal defence and slotted it home for his second goal.
The rhythm of the game continued to be SD Raiders Futsal holding much of the chances but denied well by Collins while Boomerangs FS tried to find a result on the counter attack.
Boomerangs FS extended their lead to 3-0 just before the break in a similar fashion. Another errant pass and this time it was Maxx Green who pounced to fire home the third goal.
Coming out of the half and SD Raiders Futsal started to feel just fine. Matthew Barkho scored a quickfire double to get the hosts back into the game at 3-2.
Fueled by those goals, SD Raiders Futsal equalised and set up a grandstand finish. Captain Simon Nicholas had a shot deflect into the net for 3-3.
Boomerangs FS had to withstand the surge from SD Raiders Futsal after the equaliser but did retake the lead through Benjamin Basser Silk to make it 4-3.
The fifth goal for the Boomerangs FS came from some misfortune for SD Raiders Futsal. Sebastian Malfara had a shot deflect all the way down the pitch for an own goal while they had the man advantage, making it 5-3.
SD Raiders Futsal pushed for a late flourish again but they were unable to find the back of the net again and Boomerangs FS took a vital three points.
Post match SD Raiders coach Sebastian Malfara was proud of the effort his side gave in the defeat despite their numbers and some early mistakes cost them.
For Boomerangs FS coach Nick Van Aalst, he was delighted to have locked in finals futsal after that win and only dropping five points since the opening month. He also praised keeper Ashley Collins for keeping them in the contest.

Sydney City Eagles 9 defeated West City Crusaders 3
It was a soaring effort from Sydney City Eagles in their 9-3 win against West City Crusaders at Thomas Hassell Anglican College on Saturday afternoon.
Sydney City Eagles showed their class in a huge six-goal win which has them at the top of the FPL2 Open Mens ladder and one hand on the trophy headed into the last week. Patrick Antelmi was at his goal scoring best with a hat-trick.
John Morabito was the other Eagles player with multiple goals with a pair. Michael Cimino opened the scoring while Sam and Robert Perre both scored in the second half goal glut alongside a strike from Anthony Tomelic.
West City Crusaders scored all their goals in the second half and fell to their third straight loss with one final weekend to go. Ryan Faulkner fired home a double for the visitors alongside another goal from Kurt Elborough.
Sydney Futsal Club 0 defeated by Raiders Futsal Club 7
Raiders Futsal Club ran rampant in their 7-0 win over Sydney Futsal Club at NC of Indigenous Excellence on Saturday afternoon.
It was a big bounce back from Raiders Futsal Club after their defeat last week and they set up a decider for the Premiership next weekend against the Eagles. Thomas Todd was the only Raiders Futsal Club player to score a pair of goals.
Their other goals came from Adam Voloder, Terry Bradshaw alongside another goal from Goran Ljuboja and one of their most consistent performers Christopher Godoy Bascur. Luiso Ferrera rounded off the scoring in the final minute too.
The young Sydney Futsal Club side found it tough going in the second game of their homestand against a clinical Raiders Futsal Club. They will take some lessons from this game and the season to improve next season.
Phoenix Futsal Club 2 defeated by South Coast Taipans 3
South Coast Taipans picked up an important three points in their 3-2 win over Phoenix Futsal Club at The Centre – Dural on Saturday night.
The Taipans won their sixth game of the FPL2 Open Mens season and will just miss out on the finals for the year. Cody Waller bookended the scoring with a brace with Jyden Harb also finding the back of the net in a performance coach Bobby Mazevski was proud of the side’s energy.
Phoenix Futsal Club were unable to build on their upset win last week and will finish the season on sixth spot on the FPL2 Open Mens ladder. Richard Lee and Connor Slater were their goal scorers in either half in the defeat.
