It was fitting for the Futsal Premier League 2 Open Womens season to finish with Boomerangs FS being crowned champions after a wonderful season.

The Grand Final was a tightly fought affair which was close to the end.

Let’s get onto the review!

Open Womens Grand Final: Boomerangs FS 3 defeated South Coast Taipans 1

Boomerangs FS completed their undefeated season with a comfortable 3-1 win over South Coast Taipans on Sunday afternoon at The Centre – Dural.

Sunday’s result was a culmination of the hard work for the Boomerangs FS side across the FPL2 Open Womens season. Alex Mckenzie and Rachael Corbett scored in the first half before a Stefanie Lejins goal confirmed the title.

For South Coast Taipans, they battled hard against the premiers but were unable to make many inroads on the scoreboard. Ursula Bratjanscak scored their lone goal while Lulu Lozano struck the post and was lively throughout.

On a wonderful afternoon for the Futsal Premier League 2 Open Womens competition, we had our first Grand Finals since before covid 19 and it was a celebratory day for all headed into this clash.

Boomerangs FS started in firm control. The Canberra side held much of the possession in the opening stages before Alex Mckenzie took a touch before shooting straight.

Mckenzie took her second chance with aplomb and opened the scoring. It was a well cushioned ball into her path and she tapped home to make it 1-0 for Boomerangs FS.

It seemed like the ball was stuck to Boomerangs FS feet as they kept possession. Mckenzie had a free-kick which was blocked then Stefanie Leijins’ narrow angle shot was denied.

Dionne Wilson almost doubled their delight when she snatched the ball from a defender and she flashed the ball wide of the mark.

The Taipans started to find their rhythm and much of it was down to Lulu Lozano. She was on the end of the movement and struck the base of the post with a fierce shot.

Again, it was Lozano who went close for the Taipans. She weaved through the defence then unfurled a shot which was well saved by Boomerangs FS keeper Jessica Giovinazzo.

While Taipans spurned their chances, Boomerangs FS had the sting in the tail. It fell to the feet of Rachael Corbett who smashed home to make it 2-0.

Either side of the half-time break, Taipans had a chance to pull a goal back. Abigail Jordan had her free-kick pushed over the bar then Megan Grew curved over from a smart kick-in move after the break.

Taipans continued to push forward to get back in the contest and breech a defence which had only allowed single digit goals all season. Ellen Brown had a run downfield and shot straight at Giovinazzo.

Boomerangs FS like good sides do, absorbed the pressure and fired home a third to put the contest to bed. It was a hustle play from Corbett who found Lejins to tap home for 3-0.

Despite being down by three goals, Taipans continued to push for a goal. They had several chances from close range but couldn’t find a way through the Boomerangs FS defence.

Ella-Rose Brown and Sharon Chao had a pair of opportunities for Boomerangs FS in the late stages of the contest which were spurned in trying to add to their advantage.

There was some late consolation for South Coast Taipans. Helena Halios-Lewis drove through the heart of the defence before she found Ursula Bratjanscak to make it 3-1.

Boomerangs FS saw out the last few minutes and celebrated a wonderful achievement for the club as they completed the double to round out their time in FPL2 Open Womens.

Speaking post-match Boomerangs FS coach Kristian Collins was happy to get the result and finish off the season on a strong note:

“We won which is good. Happy days for the club. For the women, the goal was to win as many as we could. There was one blemish for them against Taipans but they work hard, come to training and got their reward.” said Collins.

For South Coast Taipans coach Bobby Mazevski, he was proud of the effort from his side in a hard fought game against a top side:

“We gave it our all today, it wasn’t enough but full credit to Boomerangs FS who were the best side in the competition and put us to the sword. I think we took our time to get going and on another day we might’ve been in that game.” said Mazevski.
