The oldest club in Western Sydney, Granville & District Soccer Football Association’s Granville Waratah SFC are officially changing their name to coincide with NAIDOC Week which commences this Sunday 2 July.

“Last year we introduced our specially designed and very popular indigenous shirts, and this year we have decided to officially change our name for just one week to acknowledge our local indigenous community,” said Club President Noel Dona.

“For NAIDOC Week we will be officially known as Burramattagul Warada SFC. We are in Dharug country and the Burramattagul are our local First Nations mob.

“The club name change and indigenous shirt is all part of the education to help build a better community and hopefully this will encourage other clubs to do same.”

Burramatta is Dharug for Parramatta, which means, “place where the eels lie”. The eel features on the front of their playing shirt as do other features including, a Warada (Waratah) and a Wilbung (Magpie), the logo of the Granville & District Soccer Football Association.
