United 58 poised at causing an upset on Sunday

Sydney United 58 may have had a rocky league campaign, but coach Miro Vlastelica says his team still have a good shot of taking out the Waratah Cup on Sunday.

United 58 had a difficult NPL NSW Men’s season as momentum fizzled out as the season went on, finishing in the bottom half of the table.

Vlastelica put their underwhelming league performance down to fatigue from their uniquely lengthy previous season, where they went all the way to the Australia Cup final.

“Trying to get consistency was hard, chopping and changing the squad,” Vlastelica said.

“I could see it on some of the boys this year; they didn’t have much of a break, and you could see a lot of them were tired.”

The side’s domestic form hasn’t hampered their cup progress, making the Round of 16 of the Australia Cup and putting a scintillating showing in the Waratah Cup semi-finals.

Vlastelica is emphasising that cup magic ahead of Sunday, confident his team have the ability to lift the trophy.

“If we can finish off on a high, it would be brilliant for the team, for the club, supporters, everyone involved,” he said.

“On the day, it’s a one-off game that could go either way. I think it will come down to the team who makes the least mistakes.

“We’re Sydney United. We’re not a small club. We’re one of the biggest clubs in the NPL, in the country and with a lot of history.

“It’s always expected that you’re going to do well at Sydney United – we want to do well.”

It would be a special victory for United 58, claiming their seventh Cup and adding to their extensive cabinet of silverware.

While also adding some much-needed joy to an otherwise difficult campaign for Vlastelica’s New South Wales giants.
