The Northern Tigers won’t be playing finals football in the National Premier Leagues NSW competition in 2023 but they still have a chance of lifting silverware having secured their place in the inaugural Sapphire Cup Final this Sunday.

After leading the Tigers to the league Grand Final in 2022 and suffering a devastating penalty shootout defeat, Jake Stephenson will get another opportunity of winning a trophy on Sunday afternoon.

The opportunity to take part in Sunday’s special event has Stephenson and his team excited ahead of the challenge.

“We’re delighted to be in the inaugural 2023 Sapphire Cup Final,” said the Tigers head coach.

“With this being Northern Tigers’ second final in the last two seasons, everyone involved within the club is excited for the opportunity to perform on the day and win a trophy for this remarkable club.”

With no finals football this year, Stephenson’s side has been able to focus solely on the Sapphire Cup final.

“Collectively we have prepared extremely well during this week’s training and our approach for the game is very clear,” Stephenson said.

“The feeling within this special group of players is one of confidence and togetherness.”

The two teams took to the field against each other only a couple weeks ago where APIA came away with the points, but will appreciate the opportunity to take on the Premiers again.

“We have respect for the season APIA are having and we are well aware of their strengths after coming first in NSW NPL this season,” Stephenson said.

“Northern Tigers FC are always excited to play against the most competitive teams in NSW and we relish the chance to compete again at the highest level in another final.”

Stephenson knows what APIA’s strengths are and will look to deter them from creating the Tigers problems.

“We recognise their pace upfront and technical ability in midfield. We’ll look to nullify their options alongside focusing strongly on our strengths as a team,” he said.

The Tigers coach is confident if his team plays to the best of their ability, they will be in with a real chance to lift the trophy.

“If we play to our potential we’ll give ourselves the best opportunity to be on the winning side and achieve our first major trophy in recent years at this level,” Stephenson said.
