Greenfield instils winning culture at Saints

The Saints are marching back to the big dance and they have done it under the sterling leadership of Mark Greenfield as coach.

It has been a tough few years for St George FC but the historic club has made it back to the Grand Final on Sunday night.

Mark Greenfield in his first year in the dugout has built a spirit into the side which has propelled them firstly back into the finals and now the big dance.

“The girls kept working and training with the belief that we will succeed and it has built over the season after a tough start.” said Greenfield.

“We had a tough start to the season. Five weeks in, we were sitting second last and we made the finals in Round 25. It has been such a big effort from the squad.”

That effort might have shortened Greenfield’s life. St George FC were dubbed the comeback queens in League One Women’s for their dramatic wins and draws throughout the season.

“I’ve aged about 100 years due to [those games] but that’s coaching. You have to ride the lows and the highs which we’ve done well this season.

“As coaches we set out the training and sessions for them but ultimately it is all them on the field which generates the success for us.”

When he was pushed on the best moment of the campaign, Greenfield singled out a game they lost which helped them forward.

“Some of our losses including the one to Uni earlier this season. We went into the sheds smiling and happy after playing well and it was a turning point for us.”

St George FC started to turn those losses into wins and rode a six-game unbeaten run into the finals and hopefully to Grand Final glory.

Looking forward, Greenfield knows it will be a tough test if they want to add silverware to their trophy cabinet on Sunday night.

“They are a good team who has been in the top four all season. We’re going to take them as they are and if our best is good enough then it will be fine.”
