Round 3 Preview – League One Women’s

Round 3 in the Football NSW League One Women’s competition is another fascinating weekend of action to enjoy across the town. We have seven games including some blockbuster clashes and it is headlined by Bankstown City Lions FC hosting Marconi Stallions in the Match of the Round. Let’s get onto the preview.

Match of the Round: Bankstown City Lions FC vs Marconi Stallions, Sunday 17 March, 5:30pm, Jensen Park

Bankstown City Lions FC face off against Marconi Stallions down at Jensen Park on Sunday afternoon.

The Lions have scored 19 goals in the first two games and have set an incredible pace for the 2024 season.

They have set up a good platform for their goal to return straight back to the NPLNSW Women’s competition next year.

Lions captain Liana Danaskos found the back of the net for her first goal of the season in their huge win and is keen to lead from the front again.

Marconi Stallions picked up their first win in a 3-2 success against South Coast Flame FC down at Sir Ian McLennan Park.

The Stallions showed tremendous grit in the win and hope it will push them forward against the rampant Lions.

Youngster Erinn Cleghorn scored the winner and she has become a vital part of the Stallions team in the last season.

Mt Druitt Town Rangers vs Central Coast Mariners, Sunday 17 March, 3pm Popondetta Park

Mt Druitt Town Rangers take on Central Coast Mariners in their game at Popondetta Park on Sunday afternoon.

The Town Rangers had a solid 5-0 win against Sutherland Strikers FC in their travels to Kareela Oval last weekend.

Leena Khamis led from the front again for the Town Rangers with two goals which takes her tally to three for the season.

They face their biggest test in the early season against a fellow unbeaten side and hope to make it three from three on Sunday.

Central Coast Mariners featured in the Match of the Round and won 5-1 against Blacktown City FC.

Annalise Rasmussen made an impact in her first start with a well taken goal and two assists so will be keen to repeat the dose on Sunday.

Her combination with Jessica Familton and Claire Denning will be key to handing the Town Rangers their first defeat this season.

Inter Lions FC vs St George FC, Sunday 17 March, 3pm, Majors Bay Reserve

Inter Lions face off against champions St George FC in their game at Majors Bay Reserve on Sunday afternoon.

The Lions were beaten 5-0 by high flying Hills United FC at Majors Bay Reserve on Sunday afternoon.

They haven’t been handed the easiest start but Inter Lions have shown signs of improvement thus far in 2024.

The Lions will look to their experienced players including Belinda Anderson-Sharp to help them get going for the season.

St George FC held off a late charge from Camden Tigers to win 3-2 and earn their first three points of the season.

Once again, Jaslyn Moore was a game changer for St George FC with a quickfire brace to earn the win.

Last year’s champions hope that win is a springboard to put together a win streak and challenge for the title again.

Camden Tigers FC vs Nepean FC, Sunday 17 March, 3pm, Ron Dine Reserve

Camden Tigers take on Nepean FC in their game down at Ron Dine Reserve on Sunday afternoon.

The Tigers battled hard before they fell to a 3-2 defeat against St George FC at Ilinden Sports Centre.

Coach Alex Prophet was encouraged by their performance and hopes they can build on that for their first points this season.

Lisa Fressard and Tia Berg found the back of the net in the loss but look to add to their goal tallies on the weekend.

Nepean FC were beaten 8-0 by front runners Bankstown City Lions in their game at Cook Park last weekend.

They have endured a tough start for this new squad but coach Joseph Ellul remains positive for the team’s future.

Nepean FC will look towards Gemma Morgan and Olivia Burke to push them forward in this contest.

SD Raiders FC vs South Coast Flame FC, Sunday 17 March, 3:30pm, Cirillo Reserve

SD Raiders FC welcome South Coast Flame FC to Cirillo Reserve for their game on Sunday afternoon.

SD Raiders FC head into this game off a well drilled 7-0 win against South East Phoenix FC in Nowra.

The combination between Abuk Nyor and Taiana Almeida has been electric for SD Raiders FC to start the season and they’ll be keen to keep that going.

SD Raiders FC have scored 11 goals in their two wins but they will be more impressed with maintain two clean sheets thus far.

South Coast Flame FC suffered their first loss of the season in a pulsating 3-2 loss to Marconi Stallions last weekend.

Cristina Barraza continued her strong start to the season with the opener to take her to three goals for the season.

The Flame will be without key player Kellie McIntyre after her red card in the first half against the Stallions.

Hills United FC vs Sutherland Strikers FC, Sunday 17 March, 3:45pm, Bella Vista Public School

Hills United FC have their game against Sutherland Strikers at Bella Vista Public School on Sunday afternoon.

The hosts had another comfortable win in their 5-0 success against Inter Lions FC at Majors Bay Reserve last Sunday.

Hills United FC have kept two clean sheets to start the League One Women’s season as they remain one of the stingiest defences in the league.

Part of that has been the work of Aisling Davidson in the back four and the defender has popped up for some important goals for Hills United FC.

Sutherland Strikers were beaten 5-0 by Mt Druitt Town Rangers in their first home game of the season at Kareela Oval.

It has been a tough start to the 2024 season for Sutherland Strikers who face off against three of the top contenders in League One Women’s.

The Strikers squad is still gelling together and hopefully they can put in another good performance in the north west.

Blacktown City FC vs South East Phoenix FC, Sunday 17 March, 4pm, Landen Stadium

Blacktown City FC welcome South East Phoenix FC to Landen Stadium for their game on Sunday afternoon.

They will look to bounce back after their 5-1 loss to Central Coast Mariners in last weekend’s Match of the Round.

Striker Jenny Hughes scored the only goal in the defeat and her work up top for Blacktown City FC will be central to their success.

Despite the loss, Blacktown City FC showed in patches they can compete against the top teams and hope to put in a full performance on Sunday.

South East Phoenix FC were beaten 7-0 by SD Raiders FC in their first home game of the season on Sunday afternoon.

The Phoenix side is back on their travels this week as they try to pick up their first points of the 2024 season.
