Dual registration reminder – 2024 Update

Playing for more than one club at a time (commonly known as dual registration) is prohibited under FIFA statutes, and that prohibition applies to every level of football.

There are very limited circumstances under which Football Australia has provided exemptions from this prohibition. As a result, Football NSW is only able to consider supporting dual registration opportunities for children in accordance with the following two categories of exceptional circumstances:

  • Split Family – e.g., a child whose parents have separated but have a joint custody arrangement registers for a club near each parent’s respective homes
  • Regional Development – e.g., a player from a country area seeks to register for a local club but also pursue an opportunity to play in a NPL/State League competition

Dual registration must be approved by Football Australia and applications must be supported by both clubs and both competition administrators before Football NSW can put the request to Football Australia.

Whilst it is only available in very limited circumstances, dual registration ensures that football opportunities remain accessible for players in split families and in regional areas.

Please note that severe sanctions apply to players and clubs in breach of this prohibition.
