Scenes as Prospect United SC win promotion to League One Men’s
Prospect United SC completed the comeback and defeated Bonnyrigg White Eagles FC 3-2 after extra-time in the second leg of the promotion/relegation playoff, winning 4-3 on aggregate, to be promoted to the League One Men’s competition for the first time, at the expense of the Eagles, who dropped to the League Two Men’s competition for the first time.
A strong crowd contingent was in attendance to support the two sides, with history beckoning.
Bonnyrigg had a strong start to the match with a header going just wide left of the post in the 2nd minute.
Prospect, however, struck the first blow in the 11th minute when a long ball from defence found Richard Stewart, who ran down the byline into the box and found Praneet Singh; his shot was miscued and so fell into the path of Reo Hirose, who volleyed the ball home to give Prospect a 1-0 lead on the night and a 2-2 aggregate score.
Four minutes later, Bonnyrigg hit straight back on a swift counter attack, the ball going down the right before it was cut back to Mabior Garang in the middle, who side-footed the ball into the back of the net to level the match at 1-1 on the night but re-gave Bonnyrigg their lead in the tie at 3-2 up.
The home fans found their voice following the goal, urging their side on to make the most of their advantage in the match, as they continued to send attacking headers wide of the target.
A back-and-forth contest played in the middle third mainly saw neither side able to create any notable chances in the period following.
However, in the 43rd minute, a header cleared by the Bonnyrigg defence into the path of Singh, whose powerful shot from 25 yards stun the palms of Bonnyrigg goalkeeper, Griffin Barry, before Jacob Micallef headed home on the rebound to give Prospect a 2-1 lead on the night and levelled the contest at 3-3 on aggregate.
Prospect goalkeeper Zac Northey was called into a strong save from the restart as the White Eagles once again looked for a way to come from behind.
The visitors looked to take the lead in the tie in the first minute of first-half stoppage time, but the result of a cross delivered into the right from Micallef saw Singh head just wide right from inside the box.
Following two additional minutes, Prospect took a 2-1 lead into the half-time as the match remained level on aggregate, 3-3.
Bonnyrigg came out strongly in the second half and very early on, had a header from a corner which went just wide left of the goal.
Prospect also did the same in the 53rd minute when Singh intercepted a pass in the midfield and ran with the ball down the field, before he launched a right-footed shot from 30 yards, which took a tough turn off the turf and forced Barry into a diving save to his left to keep the ball out.
The White Eagles had a big chance to take the lead in the 66th minute when a ball sent into the box found the head of Garang, who headed the ball back to John Roberts, who was free in the box, but Roberts could only manage to head the ball over the goal.
The Eagles were circling and had the next chance in the match one minute later when a shot taken on from range just went past the right post.
Bonnyrigg had the next chance in the 76th minute from a free kick, where a shot direct on target from Fumuto Kamada was saved down low to his left by Prospect’s Northey.
Bonnyrigg had a chance to seal a win on aggregate and stay in the League One Men’s competition in the third minute of stoppage time when Daniel Bittar received the ball inside the box and fired a strong left-footed shot on goal, but Northey pulled off a strong save to send the ball over the crossbar.
From the resulting corner, Bonnyrigg once again thought they had found the tie winner through the head of Roberts, but the ball was headed off the goal line by Prospect’s Shaan Birring, all amid shouts for a penalty by the home fans.
Following five minutes of stoppage time, the referee blew for the end of the 90 minutes, with Prospect ahead 2-1 on the night but the tie level at 3-3 on aggregate, with extra-time to follow.
The tie had its decisive moment in the 102nd minute when Prospect substitute Mathew Crossley won the ball in midfield and sent fellow substitute Jakob Petterson on a run down the field; the space opened up for Petterson, which he took advantage of and launched a shot from 30 yards on goal which found the top-right corner of the goal to the elation of the away side.
Prospect had taken the lead for the first time since the 14th minute of the first leg, leading 3-1 on the night and 4-3 on aggregate, as they celebrated with their travelling fans so hard that the fencing around the pitch broke and Petterson shown a yellow card for celebrating by taking his shirt off.
The match also fired up in the stands, with both sets of fans showing their support as the tie drew closer to an end.
Bonnyrigg continued to fight to find an equaliser late and in the 116th minute, a cross from Bittar found Roberts in the box, whose backheel effort was saved by Northey.
Garang headed wide left in the first minute of stoppage time as Bonnyrigg continued to search for the late goal which would force a penalty shootout.
That minute of stoppage time was the only one as the referee blew for full-time to the elation of the Prospect players, coaches and fans, as Prospect earned promotion to the League One Men’s competition for the first time in their history for 2026 following a 3-1 second-leg win and a 4-3 win on aggregate.
For Bonnyrigg, meanwhile, they were relegated to the League Two Men’s competition for the first time, the storied club falling to the third tier of football in the state.
For the third year in a row, the League Two Men’s side toppled the League One Men’s side in this playoff tie, with two new teams competing in the League Two Men’s competition for 2026.
Prospect will prepare for life in the League One Men’s competition as they look to test themselves at a higher level in 2026, while Bonnyrigg will hope to bounce back when they take on the challenge of fighting for promotion straight back up next year.
