Former Manchester United Academy expert leads Club Capability Building Workshop
Heads of Programs from Football NSW Leagues clubs were able to learn from Mick Matthews, former English FA Coach Developer and Manchester United Academy Coach Development Manager, at a Club Capability Building Workshop in late March at Valentine Sports Park.
With over 90 technical staff in attendance, the focus of Mick’s session was on how FNSW Junior Development Leagues and FNSW Youth Leagues Heads of Programs can better support coaches in training; providing clear guidance and ongoing feedback to strengthen delivery and ensure alignment with the club’s coach development framework and methodology.
“Mick’s experience and practical insights added real value for the coaches, particularly around creating high-quality learning environments, using simple language that supports both player and coach development,” said Stephen Bott, Football NSW Club Technical Development Coordinator.
“This aligns directly with what Football NSW are driving through the Club Standards & Benchmarking Framework; consistent, high-quality environments across all clubs.”
Mick shared both theory and practical insights around session design, coaching approach and aligning delivery to a clear playing style across the program.
A key theme was the importance of using simple, consistent messaging and creating a player-centred environment where decision-making and repetition of practice are prioritised.
“Many thanks to Football NSW for the opportunity to present and deliver at the recent workshop. It was great to connect with the clubs technical staff and share some of my experiences,” said Matthews.
“What stood out was the quality of work already taking place across the clubs. There’s a strong foundation in place, and hopefully some of the ideas shared can be taken into their own environments.”
“The Head of Program has a key role in supporting and developing coaches, providing guidance, feedback and clarity, all aligned to a Coach Development framework. Much like the EPPP in the UK, the Football NSW Club Standards & Benchmarking framework plays an important role in ensuring alignment from philosophy through to delivery.”
Football NSW would like to thank Mick for his time and for sharing his knowledge and experience so openly.
