Football NSW has named the Nepean Referees Group (NRG) as its Club Changer Club of the Month for June, recognising the group’s outstanding commitment to creating a positive, supportive environment for referees.

Club Changer is Football Australia’s Club Development Program, designed to strengthen clubs, improve sustainability, and support long-term growth and success across all levels of the game.

Nepean Football Association CEO Alicia Green highlighted the importance of the “18 Green” initiative, a joint program between Nepean Football Association and Nepean Referees Group aimed at increasing awareness of the crucial role referees play in grassroots football, particularly junior match officials.

“While respect for all referees is important, there is a need for special attention towards young referees to support their wellbeing and confidence,” Green said.

“As the age of a referee isn’t always apparent, a simple identifier in the form of a green armband is issued to each junior referee as part of their kit, worn on the sleeve or sock on matchday.

“18 Green is a powerful step towards building a football community that values and supports its junior referees. By adhering to the principles of respect, protection and retention, the aim is to create a positive and inclusive environment for our young officials.”

Football NSW Club Development Program Manager Trevor Huxley praised the initiative and the forward-thinking approach from Nepean.

“Referees are absolutely vital to football, and it’s great to see NRG and Nepean FA raising awareness and supporting their young referees,” Huxley said.

“The 18 Green campaign is designed to foster a supportive environment and protect young referees.”
