Football NSW has officially recognised its growing alignment with the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award – Australia, strengthening its commitment to supporting young people through football pathways that extend well beyond the pitch.

The collaboration acknowledges the increasing number of Football NSW clubs already engaged in the Duke 4Sport program, which enables participants to complete their Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards through structured involvement in football activities.

Rather than launching a new initiative, Football NSW is formally endorsing and amplifying existing activity already taking place across the state’s grassroots football system, where athletes, coaches, referees and volunteers are already gaining valuable life experience through the program.

Through Duke 4Sport, participants are able to complete key components of the Duke of Edinburgh framework, including Physical Recreation, Skills Development, and Voluntary Service, all through their involvement in football.

Football NSW Head of Strategic Partnerships & Corporate Affairs, Helen Armson, said the recognition highlights the strength of grassroots football in developing young people both on and off the field.

“Football NSW is proud to formally recognise and endorse the outstanding work already happening across our clubs through the Duke 4Sport program,” Armson said.

“This is not about creating something new, but about shining a light on the incredible impact already taking place in our football communities.

“Our clubs are helping young people build confidence, leadership, resilience and life skills through their involvement in football whether as players, coaches, referees or volunteers.

“By strengthening our alignment with the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, we are helping ensure these experiences are recognised as part of a broader development journey that extends far beyond the game.”

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award – Australia CEO Helen White also welcomed Football NSW’s formal recognition of the program, confirming its role in supporting youth development pathways.

“I would like to officially acknowledge Football NSW Limited as a Duke 4Sport Partner,” White said.

“Duke 4Sport Partners provide opportunities for participants to complete their Physical Recreation, Skills and Voluntary Service sections of the Duke of Ed framework.
