Round 21 Review – League One Women’s
Round 21 in the Football NSW League One Women’s competition was another thrilling instalment, with the ladder and finals race receiving further movement after an exciting Super Sunday of action.
There were six games to enjoy across the weekend, headlined by the Match of the Round between St George FC and Marconi Stallions FC.

Match of the Round: St George FC 2-2 Marconi Stallions FC
St George FC and Marconi Stallions FC shared the points in a thrilling 2-2 draw in the Match of the Round at Barton Park on Sunday evening.
The Saints will feel like it was two points dropped after twice holding the lead. Abbey-Rose Cryer opened the scoring in the 45th minute before substitute Janan Codmani restored their advantage in the 87th minute, only for Marconi to fight back once again.
The Stallions showed tremendous resilience, equalising twice throughout the contest. Substitute Ilana Kola brought the scores level in the 61st minute before Jasmyn Windsor struck in the 90th minute to secure a valuable point and complete a four-point week following their midweek victory over Central Coast Mariners.
St George FC created the first opportunity of the match, with Maiya Perdikaris delivering a dangerous free-kick that Marconi goalkeeper Elizabeth Kerkham had to tip over the crossbar.
The Stallions began to settle into the contest and produced their first warning shot through Pene Bonovas, whose effort from distance drifted wide.
Bonovas continued to influence the game early, attempting to flick a cross towards goal before St George goalkeeper Stephanie Grimbilos intervened.
Marconi enjoyed a strong period of possession, with Hannah Voloder seeing two efforts comfortably collected.
The visitors thought they had opened the scoring when Erinn Cleghorn and Kaitlin Kiparizov combined to find the net, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside.
St George finished the half strongly and eventually found the breakthrough in the 45th minute. A flowing attacking move ended with Tayla Cvetkovski’s effort saved before Abbey-Rose Cryer reacted quickest to give the Saints the lead.
The hosts nearly doubled their advantage from another set piece, with Perdikaris delivering a dangerous free-kick that found Kyla Vanderlaan, whose header struck the left post.
Marconi came close to responding when Charmaine Marquinez found space inside the penalty area but could only poke her effort wide.
The Saints made it 1-0 shortly after the restart when Danielle Rutstein drove down the flank before delivering a cross for Cryer to finish emphatically.
Marconi continued to search for an equaliser and successfully beat the offside trap soon after, but Jasmyn Windsor was unable to convert, sending her effort over the bar.
St George almost extended their lead through another set piece, with Lauren Johnson’s corner finding Charlotte Young, whose header was denied by Kerkham.
The Stallions finally found their equaliser in the 61st minute. Bonovas delivered a dangerous free-kick that Grimbilos punched into the path of substitute Ilana Kola, who made no mistake from close range.
The hosts continued to push forward, with Young seeing a header saved following a corner after an effort from substitute Jordan Baker.
St George restored their lead in the 87th minute. Substitute Caitlin Webster drove forward, saw her effort saved and then recycled possession to create the opportunity for fellow substitute Janan Codmani to score.
However, Marconi once again showed their fighting spirit, with Jasmyn Windsor pouncing on a loose ball and firing home in the 90th minute to make it 2-2.
The Saints had two late free-kick opportunities in stoppage time to snatch all three points, but Baker was unable to find the back of the net.
The final whistle confirmed a share of the points in an entertaining Match of the Round contest.
Post-match, St George FC coach Mark Greenfield reflected on a match that he felt summed up his side’s season.
“It’s pretty much the story of our season that game tonight. It was a good game tonight and we played our football. We got caught on the counter unfortunately and that is the way it goes sometimes,” Greenfield said.
Marconi Stallions coach Michael Beauchamp praised his side’s resilience after a demanding week.
“The girls battled well until the end. It was tough to concede late in the first half, but they came out in the second half and equalised twice. It has been a tough week with a mid-week catch-up, but credit to the girls,” Beauchamp said.

Bankstown City Lions FC 0-1 SD Raiders FC
SD Raiders FC secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Bankstown City Lions FC at Jensen Park on Sunday afternoon.
The league leaders were tested throughout the contest but showed their quality to secure three important points and maintain their two-point advantage at the top of the ladder heading into the final stages of the season.
The opening half was a tight affair, with both teams defending strongly and unable to find the breakthrough, sending the sides into the break locked at 0-0.
When SD Raiders needed a moment of quality, they turned to League One Women’s Golden Boot leader Taiana Almeida.
The forward delivered once again, finding the back of the net in the 70th minute to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
SD Raiders then showed their defensive resilience to see out the remainder of the contest and claim another valuable three points.

Central Coast Mariners FC 1-2 Camden Tigers FC
Camden Tigers FC secured a valuable 2-1 victory over Central Coast Mariners FC in their contest at Pluim Park on Sunday afternoon.
The result marked the Tigers’ first win since Round 15 and provided some breathing room from the bottom of the ladder.
Both sides started brightly and created attacking opportunities throughout the opening period, but neither could find the back of the net as the match went into half-time locked at 0-0.
Camden opened the scoring almost immediately after the restart, with Jiselle Petrovski making it 1-0 in the 46th minute.
The Mariners responded quickly, with Isabella Beresford equalising just three minutes later to make it 1-1 in a frantic start to the second half.
The Tigers regained their advantage in the 54th minute when Ellie Lontis found the back of the net to restore their lead.
Camden were forced to withstand significant pressure in the closing stages, including after Lontis received a red card in the 89th minute.
However, the Tigers held firm to take a crucial 2-1 victory back down the highway to the south-west.
It was also a memorable afternoon for midfielder Ashlee Taff, who celebrated 100 games in a Camden Tigers FC jersey.

Nepean FC 2-2 Inter Lions FC
Points were shared in an entertaining 2-2 draw between Nepean FC and Inter Lions FC at Jamison Park on Sunday afternoon.
The contest was a true game of two halves, with both teams enjoying periods of dominance throughout the match.
Nepean FC took control in the opening half and opened the scoring in the 38th minute through Ellie Howard, who headed home from a corner.
The hosts doubled their advantage just two minutes later, with Tiana-Louise Barton finishing clinically to give Nepean a 2-0 lead heading into the break.
Inter Lions coach John Di Biase delivered a strong message at half-time, and his side responded with a much-improved second-half performance.
Substitute Jenny Hughes brought Inter back into the contest in the 77th minute, producing a superb long-range strike to make it 2-1.
The visitors completed the comeback in the 87th minute when Kiara Coscia fired home her eighth goal of the season to level the scores at 2-2.
Inter pushed forward in search of a winner during the closing stages, but Nepean defended strongly to hold on for a share of the points in an entertaining encounter.

Newcastle Jets FC 0-1 South Coast Flame FC
South Coast Flame FC secured a valuable 1-0 victory over Newcastle Jets FC at Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility on Sunday afternoon.
The result lifted South Coast Flame FC into third position on the League One Women’s ladder as they continued their push towards what could be a maiden finals appearance.
The Flame opened the scoring in the 33rd minute through winger Emily Kostovski, who finished confidently to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage heading into the break.
Newcastle Jets FC came out with renewed focus in the second half and pushed forward in search of an equaliser.
However, one of the competition’s most dangerous attacking sides was unable to find a way past Flame goalkeeper Sophie Emery, who produced another strong performance between the posts.
South Coast Flame FC held firm to secure all three points in the distance derby and strengthen their position inside the finals places.

Sutherland Strikers FC 3-1 Blacktown City FC
Sutherland Strikers FC continued their impressive run of form, defeating Blacktown City FC 3-1 at Harrie Dening Centre on Sunday afternoon.
The result extended the Strikers’ unbeaten run to six matches, keeping them in sixth position and firmly in the hunt for a finals spot.
Sutherland made the perfect start, opening the scoring in just the fourth minute through Paola Andrea Giraldo Uribe.
The hosts doubled their advantage just before half-time, with Ella Munro finding the back of the net in the 42nd minute to give the Strikers a 2-0 lead at the break.
Sutherland continued to push after the restart and effectively sealed the three points in the 79th minute when Eleonora Daga scored to make it 3-0.
Blacktown City FC continued to fight and were rewarded late, with Molly Reckless converting from the penalty spot to reduce the deficit to 3-1.
However, the Strikers held on comfortably to secure another important victory as their finals push continues.
