History Awaits As Flame And Jets Battle For Championship Glory
The stage is set, the regular season is history and now there is just one game standing between South Coast Flame FC and Newcastle Jets FC and Championship glory.
Football NSW has confirmed the fixture details for the FNSW League One Women’s Grand Final, with the two sides set to battle it out for the ultimate prize at Valentine Sports Park on Sunday, 6 September.
Kick-off is scheduled for 6:15pm, with both clubs preparing for what promises to be a memorable night under lights.
For South Coast Flame, simply reaching the Grand Final represents a remarkable achievement.
After qualifying for the finals for the first time, the Flame produced a composed 2-1 victory over Marconi Stallions FC in their Semi-Final to book their place in the decider.
Sariah Wilson and Shaylee Meehan put the Flame two goals ahead in the first half before Marconi pulled one back after the break.
The Stallions threw everything at the Flame in the closing stages, but goalkeeper Sophie Emery produced a series of crucial saves to preserve the advantage and send South Coast through to the biggest game of their season.
Now, Daniel Naumovski’s side are just 90 minutes away from completing an extraordinary rise with Championship silverware.
Standing in their way is a Newcastle Jets side that produced one of the comebacks of the season to reach the Grand Final.
The Jets found themselves two goals down against Premiers SD Raiders FC in their Semi-Final, with Taiana Almeida and Aoife Horgan putting the Premiers in control.
But Newcastle refused to surrender.
Mackenzie Preston-Poole pulled one back before Makayla Clifton equalised in the 83rd minute to send the contest into extra time.
Neither side could find a winner across the additional 30 minutes, meaning the tie went to penalties.
That was where goalkeeper Ally Boertje became the hero, saving three spot-kicks to send the Jets into the Grand Final.
The two sides now meet with everything on the line.
South Coast will be looking to continue their remarkable first finals campaign, while Newcastle will be determined to complete their comeback journey by lifting the Championship.
There will be plenty of attacking talent on display, with the likes of Flame sharpshooter Shaylee Meehan and Newcastle’s Preston-Poole capable of producing a moment of magic when it matters most.
The two clubs have taken very different paths to reach the decider, but both now have the same goal — 90 minutes from Championship glory.
