Parramatta FC Take Big Step Towards League One Return

Parramatta FC took a huge step towards returning to the League One Men’s competition, defeating Prospect United SC 4-1 in a fiery first leg of the 2026 Football NSW League One Men’s/League Two Men’s Promotion/Relegation Playoff.

The Eagles controlled much of the contest and will take a commanding three-goal advantage into next Friday’s second leg, with Prospect now facing a monumental task if they are to retain their place in League One for 2027.

Parramatta started strongly and had the first attempt in the fourth minute, with Darragh Reynor heading over the bar from a cross into the box.

Reynor was at the centre of the action again five minutes later, firing an effort against the crossbar from outside the box following a corner.

Tempers began to flare as the first half progressed, with both sides putting their bodies on the line in challenges for the ball.

Parramatta controlled possession and created the majority of the chances, looking to suffocate Prospect in their pursuit of the opening goal of the tie.

The Eagles eventually broke the deadlock in the 35th minute following strong build-up play.

Marco Sama and Ethan Oliver combined down the left, with Sama floating a ball into the box for Reynor.

The forward flicked the ball on to Mahamed Osman, who returned the favour with a cross back towards Reynor.

The striker rose emphatically to head home and cap off a dominant first half for himself and Parramatta.

Prospect’s first shot of the match came in the 38th minute, but the resilient Parramatta defence held firm.

The visitors also fired wide late in the half as the Eagles took their 1-0 advantage into the break.

Parramatta wasted no time adding to their advantage after the restart.

A Jethro Thornton corner was floated towards Sama at the back post, with the midfielder managing to play the ball back to Oliver.

Oliver settled himself before calmly slotting a left-footed finish into the net to make it 2-0 and give Parramatta a significant advantage in the tie.

Justin Biega was then called into action in the 51st minute, producing an excellent low save to his right to deny Dimos Vlachos’ free-kick.

Prospect finally found their breakthrough in the 66th minute through their captain and arguably their most dangerous player on the night, Reo Hirose.

Hirose collected the ball around 30 yards from goal before unleashing a powerful right-footed strike into the bottom-left corner to reduce the deficit to 2-1.

The goal gave Prospect renewed belief, but Parramatta remained composed.

Biega again made himself big in the 82nd minute, stopping a dangerous run and shot from Prospect as the visitors searched for an equaliser.

Instead, Parramatta regained control and restored their two-goal advantage just a minute later.

Sama found Riley Carmody-Smith, who in turn released Thornton down the left side of the box.

Thornton played a square ball across the face of goal to an unmarked Emre Savas, who calmly slotted home to make his mark off the bench and put Parramatta 3-1 ahead.

The Eagles then further strengthened their position with a fourth goal in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

Carmody-Smith found Omer Gebril in behind, with the substitute playing a dangerous ball across the grass.

Prospect defender Joshua Okan was unable to adjust his body in time, with the ball deflecting into his own net to make it 4-1.

The final whistle was followed by fireworks on and off the field, with tempers remaining high after a fiercely contested Western Sydney derby.

Parramatta now take a three-goal advantage into the second leg and will be confident of completing the job and securing their return to the League One Men’s competition.

Prospect, meanwhile, face a huge challenge at home next Friday, needing to overturn a three-goal deficit if they are to remain in League One for the 2027 season.

With 90 minutes remaining in the tie, there is still everything to play for.
