St George FC Rally From Behind To Secure NPL Men’s NSW Survival

St George FC have retained their place in the NPL Men’s NSW competition after producing a dramatic second-half fightback to defeat Northern Tigers 3-1 at Barton Park on Saturday night.

The Saints trailed at half-time after the Tigers produced a strong opening 45 minutes, but a relentless second-half performance ultimately turned the Promotion/Relegation Playoff on its head.

Mark Rodic’s equaliser in the 64th minute sparked the comeback before two goals in the final five minutes from Patrick O’Shea and Isaac Cunningham completed a remarkable turnaround and secured St George’s top-flight status for 2027.

It was a genuine game of two halves.

Northern Tigers looked the more dangerous side throughout the opening period and were rewarded inside the first 15 minutes.

Oliver Scott delivered a long throw into the area, with Jesse Spang flicking the ball on towards the back post.

Ally Brown had timed his run perfectly, sneaking in behind the St George defence before finishing to put the visitors 1-0 ahead.

The goal gave the Tigers confidence and they continued to threaten as St George struggled to turn their possession into genuine attacking opportunities.

Northern Tigers thought they had doubled their advantage at one stage, but the goal was ruled out after Ryan Attard was adjudged to have fouled St George goalkeeper James Husoy.

It proved to be a crucial moment in the context of the contest.

St George continued to have plenty of the ball as half-time approached but were unable to progress their possession into dangerous areas.

The Tigers, meanwhile, looked increasingly threatening whenever they won the ball and transitioned forward.

The Saints therefore entered the half-time break knowing they needed to change something.

Whatever was said in the St George dressing room appeared to have the desired effect.

The hosts emerged for the second half with renewed purpose, mounting attack after attack and pushing Northern Tigers deeper and deeper.

The Tigers still had their opportunities, with Tom Parkes going close shortly before the equaliser after a slick interchange of passes released him through on goal.

Parkes fired his effort into the side netting, however, with the Tigers unable to extend their advantage.

That miss would prove costly.

St George finally found the breakthrough in the 64th minute.

Northern Tigers failed to adequately clear a set piece, with the resulting ball looping into the area.

Mark Rodic reacted quickest, meeting the delivery with a flicked header that struck the post before finding the back of the net.

Suddenly, the momentum had completely shifted.

St George sensed that the opportunity to turn the tie around was there, while Northern Tigers were forced to defend wave after wave of pressure.

The longer the game remained level, the more the tension increased around Barton Park.

With just minutes remaining, the Saints finally found the goal that put them ahead.

Another dangerous set piece from Edmun Haddad caused problems for the Tigers defence, with Patrick O’Shea arriving at the back post to head home in the 89th minute.

From 1-0 down at half-time, St George were suddenly 2-1 ahead and on the brink of securing their NPL status.

Northern Tigers had no choice but to throw players forward in search of an equaliser.

Instead, St George found the decisive third.

Deep into stoppage time, Isaac Cunningham took advantage of the space left behind by the Tigers as they committed numbers forward.

His shot proved too powerful for goalkeeper Matteo Scali to handle, finding the back of the net and sparking huge celebrations among the Saints players, staff and supporters.

The final whistle confirmed St George’s 3-1 victory and a 4-1 aggregate triumph across the two-legged playoff.

For the Saints, it was a remarkable turnaround after Northern Tigers had looked the more likely side during the opening half.

For the Tigers, the defeat will be a bitter one after coming within 45 minutes of earning promotion to the NPL Men’s NSW competition.

Speaking after the match, St George FC’s Brian Brown was delighted with the response from his side.

“I think the first half, we didn’t create enough chances, but the second half we dominated the game and once we got the goal, I felt pretty confident we’d go on to win the game,” Brown said.

Asked what had contributed to the team’s improved results late in the season, Brown pointed to the strength and unity within the playing group.

“The team itself, the boys are just so good and they get on so well. Our problem has been conceding silly goals and not finishing chances at the other end. Tonight was better creatively and we got three goals to show for it.”

St George can now look forward to another season in the top flight, with the Saints having survived a tense Promotion/Relegation Playoff and secured their NPL Men’s NSW status for 2027.

For Northern Tigers, the result is a cruel conclusion to an impressive campaign in which they finished second in League One Men’s and pushed St George all the way across the two legs.

They will now regroup and look to go again in 2027.
