Football NSW’s 17s Boys Futsal Talent Support Program (TSP) went head-to-head with the Solomon Islands in an entertaining international friendly at Valentine Sports Park on Tuesday night, helping the visiting side prepare for next month’s 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Senegal.

The friendly provided the Solomon Islands with a valuable opportunity to test themselves against quality opposition ahead of the international tournament, while offering Football NSW’s emerging futsal players an important learning experience against a side renowned for its passion, energy and enthusiasm for the game.

Played under international futsal laws, including the stop clock format that will be used at the Youth Olympic Games, the match provided both teams with a valuable opportunity to experience the conditions and demands of international competition.

With Solomon Islands supporters in attendance to cheer on their team, the contest proved to be a closely fought and entertaining encounter, with both sides creating numerous opportunities in front of goal.

The intensity, motivation and passion displayed by both teams contributed to an exciting match, with the Solomon Islands eventually claiming a narrow 6–5 victory.

For Football NSW’s 17s Boys Futsal TSP squad, the match was an opportunity to develop their understanding of different playing styles and learn to manage the challenges that come with competing in an international environment.

Football NSW Futsal Manager Jordan Guerreiro said the experience provided valuable lessons for the emerging players, particularly in adapting to the atmosphere and intensity that can accompany international matches.

“The match was a great opportunity to see how our Futsal TSP group can handle the passion and excitement that the Solomons bring to their game. A different playing style and motivation proved to be tricky for the team to manage, especially with the small crowd cheering the Solomons on,” Guerreiro said.

“The takeaway from this experience is that the noise, motivation and passion from the Solomons is similar to what our players may experience overseas at the national team level, and how to handle those situations and the environment to perform.”

Guerreiro also acknowledged The Centre Dural for its support in hosting the Solomon Islands delegation during their time in Sydney, recognising the importance of strong relationships in creating opportunities for international football development.

“We thank The Centre Dural and all their staff who are involved, for all their efforts in hosting the Solomons travels and care while they are here in Sydney. Without the affiliation and connection to such Centre and projects, opportunities like these don’t happen,” Guerreiro said.

The friendly highlighted the value of collaboration and international connections in developing the next generation of futsal talent, providing both teams with a meaningful opportunity to prepare, learn and grow through competition.

For the Solomon Islands, the match served as an important step in their preparations for the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Senegal, while Football NSW’s young futsal players gained valuable experience that will support their ongoing development on and off the court.
