Former Socceroos captain and Newcastle Jets Premiership-winning head coach Mark Milligan will be the guest of honour at the sold-out 2026 Football NSW Coaching Conference, to be held at Valentine Sports Park on 21–22 November.

Australia’s largest gathering of football coaches will bring together coaches from across the game for two days of practical sessions, expert insights and professional development, with Milligan’s appearance set to be a major highlight of the annual event.

A product of the NSW football pathway, Milligan’s journey from grassroots football in Bankstown to the highest levels of the international game is a testament to the opportunities football can provide both on and off the pitch.

Milligan began his football journey with Birrong Sports Club in the Bankstown & Districts Football Association as well as the likes of the St Johns SC and Parramatta Eagles before progressing through the Australian Institute of Sport and earning an opportunity with Northern Spirit. What followed was an illustrious playing career spanning more than 380 professional appearances across Australia, Japan, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Scotland and England.

His club career included stints with A-League sides Sydney FC, Newcastle Jets, Melbourne Victory and Macarthur FC, as well as JEF United Chiba, Al Ahli and Hibernian FC, among others.

At international level, Milligan represented Australia across the under-20, under-23 and senior national teams, earning 80 caps for the Socceroos. He was the youngest player selected in Australia’s squad for the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany and went on to represent the nation at three FIFA World Cups, captaining the Green and Gold on numerous occasions.

Milligan also enjoyed success at club level, winning the Joe Marston Medal after an outstanding performance for Melbourne Victory in the 2015 A-League Grand Final, where Victory defeated Sydney FC 3–0.

Following his retirement from professional football, Milligan transitioned into coaching, working as an assistant coach at Macarthur FC, Adelaide United and the Malaysian national team. He also gained valuable experience as head coach of St George FC during the 2022 League One Men’s season.

His appointment as Newcastle Jets head coach ahead of the 2025–26 A-League Men’s season marked his first senior professional head coaching role and a return to a club he had previously represented as a player.

Milligan made an immediate impact, guiding the Jets to a remarkable debut season that delivered the Hahn Australia Cup and the A-League Men’s Premiership, while also securing qualification for the AFC Champions League. His achievements were recognised with the A-League Men’s Coach of the Year award, capping a memorable first season in senior professional management.

Football NSW Coach Education Manager Chris Gallo said Milligan’s experience across the playing and coaching spectrum would provide valuable insights for coaches attending the conference.

“Opportunities to hear from people who have experienced the game at the highest level are incredibly valuable for our coaches. Mark brings a unique perspective on leadership, performance and the demands of elite football, and we want our coaches to be able to take those insights back into their own environments,” Gallo said.

Football NSW Head of Football Edward Ferguson said Milligan’s journey was a powerful example of the NSW football pathway and the opportunities it can create.

“We welcome Mark to celebrate the successful transition of a NSW person and living the football pathway in NSW as a player and coach,” Ferguson said.

Milligan will take part in a special Q&A session with conference MC Steph Branz on Day One, sharing insights from his experiences as an international player, Socceroos captain and now one of the A-League Men’s most exciting emerging coaches.

With the 2026 Football NSW Coaching Conference sold out, Milligan’s appearance will provide attendees with a unique opportunity to hear first-hand about the leadership, preparation, challenges and lessons that have shaped his journey through Australian and international football.

The two-day conference will once again reinforce Football NSW’s commitment to coach education and development, equipping coaches with knowledge, practical tools and fresh perspectives to support players and teams at every level of the game.
