What is a grant?

Put very simply, a grant is a sum of money given by one organisation to another for a specific purpose. The critical point here is grants are offered for a specific purpose.

Who offers grants?

Grants are provided by a wide variety of organisations, but the biggest providers are the different levels of government.

Local Government – allocate significant amounts to improving their community facilities while also offering smaller amounts aimed at building community activities and community group capacity through local clubs.

State – much of facility development funding comes from state government. State government will also offer grants to community groups which compliment government policies. State government funding is also available to assist in supporting events within the state, especially in rural areas.

Federal – a lot of federal government funding is focused on elite sport and facility development.

Corporate – Corporations and foundations can be valuable allies in your club’s fund seeking journey. While they may not be “lifetime solutions,” these partners offer unique benefits including:

  • Innovation and Flexibility: Less restricted than government grants, they can support creative approaches and adapt to your needs.
  • Shared Mission: Partnering goes beyond funding. Share your goals and mission to build a meaningful connection.
  • Community Investment: Corporations often target local communities where they operate, creating a mutual benefit.

Grants enable clubs and associations to provide effective change whilst building community capacity.

What information is required when writing a good grant application?

Basically, emphasising the Who, What, Where, Why, When and How.

A good grant application should clearly state:

  • Who will benefit?
  • What is going to happen?
  • Where is it going to happen?
  • Why does it need to happen?
  • When is it going to happen? And
  • How is it going to happen and how much will it cost?

You must know this clearly to communicate it.

Good luck!
